REVIEW OF PAKISTAN’S POWER & ENERGY SECTOR • Pakistan has amongst the worlds highest and fastest rising urbanization • Under 15 population is 39%, pointing increase exponently rather than gradual increase in energy demand • Poor are paying 5-7 time more for their fuel costs than those in the cities. • Shift from kerosene use to biomass has exposed women to unclean fuel, hazards of indoor air pollution, and hours of extra work in searching and collecting biomass Indoor air pollution causes over 110,000 deaths in Pakistan annually. Most victims are women and children.

SOLAR POWER DATA • Japan is the leader in solar Photo Voltaic (PV) power plants with over 1,200 MW of installed capacity, followed by Germany (794 MW), the US (365 MW) and India (86 MW). • Typical solar (PV) power generating stations are in the 300 — 600 KW capacity. • The world’s largest PV solar power plants are in Germany and Portugal with a capacity of 10 MW and spread over 62 acres.

GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS IN THE FIELD OF RENEWABLE ENERGY • Alternative Energy Development Board(AEDB) estimates that 50,000 MW energy potential in wind source with following targets: • Electrification of 40,000 Villages / Remote through alternative Renewable Energy technologies. • Designing of laws and taxes to promote and encourage in the country. • Indigenous Development of Wind Turbines. • Indigenous Development of Solar PV Panels. • Establishment of Solar Thermal Power Plants • AEDB issued 80 LOI to develop 50 MW power , so far only 15 has submitted. • Private Power In fracture Board(PPIP)-one window operation • Pakistan Counsel for Renewable Energy Technology(PCRET)- Approximately one billion projects • National Environment Action Plan-Support Program me(NEAP-SP)- energy conservation and renewable energy
