Background And Introduction Background Sergey Alyukov was studying at BGSU in 2006, 2007 Got involved with Center for Applied Technology (CAT) Relationship developed around CAT agenda Applied research Economic development Industrial support and outreach Engagement of faculty with organizations Student based applied research Discussions evolved toward possible exchange project Drafted preliminary agreement between BGSU, SUSU, to be revisited as part of ongoing dialogue

Background And Introduction Introduction Dr. Sinn is a professor, Technology Systems Department Was Director, Center for Applied Technology (CAT) Currently Chair, Technology Systems Department Technology Systems Department is One of four departments in College of Technology (COT) Part of BGSU, one of several state universities in Ohio Ohio is in the midwestern US, heavy industry, agriculture Heavily oriented toward student success Hands-on, innovative, oriented toward applied research Proposed renaming “Engineering Technologies Department” Proposing to develop a relationship with SUSU

Technology Systems, A 25 Year Base College of Technology grew from College of Education Formed in mid 80’s with two departments TSD was one of two original departments Four programs, multiple undergraduate majors Manufacturing Aviation Studies Electronics and Computer Technology Construction Management Master of Industrial Technology, late 80’s, early 90’s Online Ph.D. consortium with Indiana State, late 90’s About 300 students in 1984; over 600 in 2008

Technology Systems, A 25 Year Base 10 FT tenure/track, 3-4 PT/FT instructors in 1984 13 FT tenure/track, 18 PT/FT instructors in 2008 3-4 graduate assistants, no doctoral fellows in 1984 8-10 graduate assistants, 3-4 doctoral fellows in 2008 Faculty credentials 60-70% teacher education in 1984 Faculty credentials 60-70% engineering in 2008 Many undergraduate students in TSD are transfer, 2+2 Graduated about 80 masters, 7 Ph.D. students Scholarly productivity, applied research, growth Two funded research centers

Engineering Technologies: New Directions At BGSU Based on TSD strengths, gradual shift has occurred Engineering Technology (ENGT) started fall, 2007 Manufacturing and Mechanical Design merged Resulting program, ENGT, has about 125 students today ENGT faculty are pursuing TAC ABET accreditation Significant emphasis on articulation, transfer, 2+2 Applied research niche, renovated lab to support Emerging emphasis, innovative online programs Shift from TSD to Engineering Technologies Department

Exciting New Undergraduate Programs, Engineering Technologies Majors Construction became separate department in fall, 2009 Construction departure brought greater focus to others Shift from TSD to Engineering Technologies Department Engineering Technologies shift at program, major level Programs renaming around new focus (proposed 2010) Aviation Engineering Technology Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology Existing Engineering Technology program Internal synergy focused on Engineering Technologies Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)

Quality Systems (QS) major to be launched fall, 2010 BS degree completion, non-traditional and traditional students Launch can articulate with two year institutions globally Innovative teaching and learning systems, 100% online Majors being considered for possible reformulation Aviation Engineering Technology Avionics Engineering Technology Green Energy Engineering Technology Selected majors being eliminated in the process Emphasis on TAC ABET accreditation, STEM orientation Exciting New Undergraduate Programs, Engineering Technologies Majors

Most faculty, full time, dedicated teaching professionals Faculty have hands-on, technical experiences in field Professor to student ratio of about 1-20 Hands-on, applied theory, heavy STEM orientation 2-3 cooperative education experiences required Hourly rate is among the highest student wage on campus Continuously striving to build stronger student experiences Advisory committee’s represent a key customer base Filter curriculum, provide relevancy and reality Provide adjuncts to help teach, build strong co-op positions Exciting New Undergraduate Programs, Engineering Technologies Majors

Increasing emphasis on applied research TECH 395 is research methods, can be based on TECH 289 TECH 495 is an actual project, built/defined in TECH 395 395 and 495 can be substituted for 389 and 489 co-op’s New lab (s) to help support, facilitate, applied research Student-based Applied Research, under development Systems still being defined, built Diverse faculty and student experiences Very important for advisory committee’s to assist Help define, build, systems for applied research Provide, build strong projects, help mentor Exciting New Undergraduate Programs, Engineering Technologies Majors

Re-Engineered Graduate Programs Technology Management Ph.D., began 1998 Indiana State University (ISU) consortium, 3 other Universities Quality Systems, Manufacturing, and Electronics and Computer Technology Specializations in TSD Human Resources and Construction specializations in other departments in COT 99% online, exception is one seminar at ISU Currently under review internally, within COT Challenges to manage the consortium Consideration is being given to initiate BGSU Ph.D. Similar model, improved based on what we have learned

New departmental name proposed, Engineering Technologies Programs, majors, in department, realigning with new name Department niche increasingly oriented to applied research TAC ABET is an increasingly important part of the base STEM is a key ingredient in the change equation…….. Entire university is going through change Budgetary challenges, must do more with less Broad-based university reorganization may be on the horizon New department of Engineering Technologies emerging What role can Engineering Technologies play?
