  2. Purpose To go through the MICS4 steps and identify the technical assistance that will be provided at each critical survey stage. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  3. Step 1: Data Assessment Discussions in county to determine if a MICS is required Discussions between Country Office (CO), Regional Office (RO) and Headquarters (HQ) Decision in the country made on whether to conduct MICS4. Draft MoU produced. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  4. Step 2: Survey Plan Using the Country Survey Plan and MoU Template, survey plan and MoU prepared by the implementing partner in consultation with UNICEF Country Office Shared with Regional Office for review. Regional Office shares plan with HQ Feedback provided to the Country Office Survey Plan finalised MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  5. Step 3: Human Resources Identification and recruitment of survey personnel i.e. survey coordinator and UNICEF consultant at the country level Standard ToRs and consultant roster shared with country by Regional Office MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  6. Step 4: Steering Committee Established at the country level Standard ToR for steering (and technical committees) to be provided by Regional Office MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  7. Step 5: Questionnaire Design Draft questionnaire produced at country level First review by RO, feedback provided to country within 1 week Second draft of questionnaire produced Second review by RO and HQ. Feedback provided within 1 week. Final questionnaire for pre-test produced in country MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  8. Step 6: Translation Questionnaire translated in country. Back translation organized at country level. Translation of manuals. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  9. Step 7: Sampling Design of sample in country Country sends sample design to RO for review. RO discusses with HQ. Feedback to country Selection of sample RO mobilises consultant to provide technical assistance MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  10. Step 8: Supplies Based on questionnaire and size of sample, quantity of supplies is determined at the country level Consultation with RO for advice on procurement of supplies. RO consults with HQ on updates on recommended supplies MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  11. Step 9: Pre-test Conducted after appropriate training in the country Assistance from household survey consultant mobilised by RO as needed MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  12. Step 10: Finalizing the Questionnaire Based on results of pretest the questionnaire is finalised Shared with RO for final consultation (RO shares with HQ) Final questionnaire produced in country and sent to printers MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  13. Step 11: Data Processing Programmes RO mobilises consultant to provide technical assistance in country Data processing staff trained on customising data entry template at MICS4 Workshop Data entry template completed in country and sent to RO/HQ for review (feedback within 1 week) Feedback provided to country and data entry template finalised MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  14. Step 12: Field Staff Training & Pilot 2-3 weeks field staff training conducted in the country followed by pilot test Assistance from household survey consultant mobilised by RO to support the training as needed MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  15. Step 13: Field Work Data Collection Assistance from household survey consultant mobilised by RO to support and monitor field work in early stages as needed MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  16. Step 14: Data Entry Simultaneous Data Entry Conducted Assistance from data processing consultant mobilised by RO to set up data entry system and support data entry in early stages MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  17. Step 15: Data Editing and Cleaning RO mobilises consultant to provide technical assistance in country as needed Data editing and cleaning conducted in country CSPro Data files and SPSS datasets shared with RO for review. RO shares with HQ. First feedback provided to country after 10 days Final SPSS data sets produced ready for tabulation and shared with RO. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  18. Step 16: Data Analysis & Tabulation RO mobilises consultant to provide technical assistance in country as needed Data analysis and complete set of tables produced in country Tabulations shared with RO for comparative review. RO shares with HQ. Feedback provided to country after 10 days Final tabulations produced ready for preliminary findings MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  19. Step 17: Preliminary Findings Produced by MICS4 implementing partner with assistance of UNICEF and disseminated. Shared with RO and HQ. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  20. Step 18: Report Writing RO mobilises consultant to provide support in country. Draft of final report produced in country Draft shared with RO/HQ for review MICS Coordinator and UNICEF focal point to have regional consultations to finalise report Report finalised MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  21. Step 19: Printing Print ready version sent to RO and HQ for final feedback (provided within 10 days) Report Printed. Soft and hard copies sent to RO and HQ (100 hard copies) MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  22. Step 20: Archiving RO/HQ coordinate with IHSN to mobilise consultant to provide support in country if needed MICS4 Country Archive completed and data anonymised and documented Archives shared with HQ for review Archive finalised and shared with RO and HQ for public sharing MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  23. Step 21: Dissemination MICS dissemination activities with assistance from UNICEF communication personnel Support provided from HQ and RO MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  24. Step 22: Further Analysis Further analysis planned in the country Support by HQ and RO as needed. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
