  3. Objectives • Provide an overview of service projects planned for the remainder of the 2010-2011 fellowship year • Serve as a discussion document for identifying stakeholders, anticipating challenges, and assessing impact • Identify areas in which VIA can provide guidance and support • Throughout the document, areas that require direct VIA involvement are italicized in red text • Introduce an estimated timeline for completion of service projects • Note: this is NOT the document we would show to Natalie, the Huangs, or the administration; the intended audience is VIA and friends

  4. Contents • Objectives • Summary • Service Project Profiles • Timeline • Next Steps

  5. Considerations After a semester at OYY, we kept the following considerations in mind when developing service project ideas: • Teacher and student time is very limited – when possible, use classroom and English Corner time to plan and execute service projects • OYY is having trouble attracting and retaining top talent in both students and teachers, mainly due to its undesirable location in the countryside • The school administration is very traditional and often resistant to change – prove the value of new ideas by highlighting that they are modern and prestigious • Going up the chain of command for approval is time-consuming and often unsuccessful – when possible, plan projects so that decisions can be made by foreign teachers and those directly involved with project

  6. Summary of Service Initiatives, Projects, & Impacts We have identified four Service Initiatives:

  21. Next Steps & Questions • Gather feedback from VIA and friends, particularly in areas that require VIA support • Develop full-blown implementation plan for each service project, including the steps required to complete each activity and who is responsible for each step • Present a shortened and revised version of this document to WB Natalie • Is presenting all of this at one time the best strategy in China? Or should we stagger the introduction of ideas? Idea  one-page summary of projects, goals, and approximate dates • Begin communications with the Huangs • Should we be communicating directly with them or should our communications go through Patrick? (e.g. new teaching proposal, teacher scholarship) • Should we present both ideas (new structure and scholarship) at same time or stagger? • How long in advance should we schedule meeting times? • Do both of the sisters want to remain involved, or just Cecilia?
