  1. HBD Construction status Itzhak Tserruya DC meeting, BNL, February, 2006 • Plans for Run-6 • Box construction • GEM assembly and testing • Status of urgent items order • CsI and testing facility • Gas system and gas monitoring system • Preamps and Readout boards • Readout electronics

  2. Plans for Run 6 • We plan to test the HBD in run-6. • We lost time due to the initial cancellation of Run-6. Order of critical items (like the PCB) got delayed and **we are trying hard** to recuperate that time so as to be able to install one box of the final detector by the end of May. • To be realistic we need a fall-back solution. For that, and to pave the way for the installation of the final box detector, we are preparing the full-scale prototype for installation in April. • By construction, the prototype will have only one detector module instrumented. The final HBD box could have all 12 detector modules installed but only a few will be instrumented (probably two), depending on the availability of readout electronics.

  3. 6 active panels 2 side covers with frame window support 2 vertical panels 2 box frames 2 HV panels HBD box construction • All raw materials (FR4 sheets, honeycomb, HV resistors, HV connectors) all parts ( frames, window support, inserts, pins, screws, HV holders) in house. • Jigs for panel construction ready • Panel construction underway • Jigs for box assembly under design or construction • Bottleneck: PCB delivery

  4. A few pictures: frames (I) Box frames Window support frames McPherson 234/302 VUV spectrometer - uses pure argon as reference gas (no vacuum) - completely enclosed 30 W D2 lamp Side cover frames

  5. A few pictures: inserts (II) All small parts ready insert for gas in/out swageloc port Gluing GEM support inserts on inner side of an active panel inserts for GEM support pin l GEM support pin

  6. A few pictures (III) Testing HV wiring - worst case 14 wires in – 21 wires out Gluing under vacuum of honeycomb to FR4 sheet Honeycomb glued to FR4 sheet McPherson 234/302 VUV spectrometer - uses pure argon as reference gas (no vacuum) - completely enclosed 30 W D2 lamp

  7. GEM assembly and testing • 3 GEM shipments so far: • - 1st batch (Oct. 05): 20 st + 10 Au plated + 30 frames • - 2nd batch (Jan. 06): 15 + 14 • - 3rd batch (Feb. 06): 5 10 + 31 • - Total 40 20 75 • Assembly steps and tests: • Stretch GEM foil and glue onto frame • Cut foil from stretching device • Solder SMD resistors to each HV segment • QA: apply 500 V across the GEM on air before and after each of these steps • Operate GEM at 500 V with 55Fe on Ar/CO2 and map the gain on 56 hexagonal pads • all data stored in a database • Status • - 1st batch: all of them assembled 16 st + 10 Au plated passed all tests • - 2nd batch: 9 assembled. All 9 failed the tests. 4 of them passed the tests only after water cleaning. Reason not clear. The other 5 will also follow water cleaning. • - We have a total of: • 30 GEM fully tested (10 Au plated and 20 standard) i.e. 10 detector modules

  8. Status of urgent item orders • PCB • - raw material produced in GB is supposed to be delivered within days to CERN. • - once the raw material arrives at CERN, GEM production will be interrupted. • - manufacturing of PCB estimated to maximum 4 weeks, will strive for 3 weeks. • - delivery expected first half of March. • - once we receive the PCB, we will need app. 1 month to complete the construction of the detector box. • Glove box • enlarged glove box ordered. Expected delivery 45-90 days, (Tom H says closer to 45d)  end March • Signal cables • - ordered. Delivery 6-8 weeks  mid March • Gas monitoring system • - 3 cell gas system ordered. Expected delivery 90-120 days  April-May • - Marginal for run-6. Will rely on water and oxygen monitors

  9. CsI evaporation facility at SB • excellent photocathodes have been produced at SB using the Italian evaporator from Jlab. • - one shot per week to master the whole procedure: handling of the GEMs, evaporation and measurements of absolute QE. • - The “completeness” of the process grows each week. “Damn good vacuum in evaporator” (TomH) Bill Andrzej

  10. GEM testing facility at SB • Stainless steel test box and 6 GEM (2 Au plated + 4 standard) shipped from WI to SB. • Top GEM was “rubbed” by cross-pieces of grid during shipping. No other GEM showed damage. •  Need to improve shipment conditions • exercising handling, assembly and testing of triple GEM detector modules to start soon

  11. Gas transparency monitor system 3-cell monitor system ordered by McPherson Hutch and services ready – Don L. 11/22/05 McPherson 234/302 VUV spectrometer - uses pure argon as reference gas (no vacuum) - completely enclosed 30 W D2 lamp

  12. HBD Gas System Simplified Single pass system for Run 6 Total detector volume: ~ 626 l (313 l each side) Flow rate: ~ 60 l/hr ( ~ 150 l/hr purge) Extensive gas monitoring to maintain O2 and H2O levels to a few ppm • Gas pipes installed • Most components ordered • or in house Pure CF4 R.Pisani

  13. Preamps, readout boards and readout electronics • Boards for the new pre-amp design were delivered a few days ago. Problem with slicing the board? • We should have enough pre-amps for at least two readout boards (Joe Harder). • New readout boards design finished. Material with optimized thickness, for minimum radiation length, ordered. Production will be made in BNL instrumentation (Bo). • Readout electronics full chain test expected very soon. Only the prototype electronics will be available in run-6 (Chi).

  14. All boards in house and tested with the exception of the new DCM and optical module • Prototype DCM and optical module expected end of February. • Full chain test will then take place. • Two FEM already exist. Have parts for additional 5 FEM  total 336 channels (2 detector modules = 192 channels) Updated HBD FEM Diagram Crate Backplane (7 blank boards, 4 crates+ 1 spare+ 2 test stands) (7 blank boards, 4 crates+ 1 spare+ 2 test stands) Clock fanout ADC Optical out Test pulse (25 blank boards. We have major of the parts for 5 boards) (4 blank boards, 1 needed + 1 spare+ 2 test stands) Clock Master New Daughter card + DCM GTM/Ethernet C.Y. Chi
