  3. Objectives • Define decision making • Identify one point as to why decision making is important • List the 6 subskills of the decision making process • To learn about effective decision making and the consequences of choices • To practice making good decisions

  4. BELLRINGER! • How do the decisions you make now differ from those as a child?

  5. How do decisions impact your health? • Physical? • Social? • Mental/Emotional?

  6. So What is Decision Making? • The cognitive process of making a choice • A position, opinion or judgment reached after much consideration • The process of mapping the likely consequences of decisions, working out the importance of individual factors, and choosing the best course of action to take.

  7. Why is it such an important skill? • To avoid risky & dangerous situations • Dealing with peer pressure • The choices teens make may drastically affect not only their own lives, but the lives of others as well

  8. Common Decisions Teens Make: • What to wear to school • What to eat for lunch • Which homework to do first • What to do on the weekends • What to do during study hall • What movie to see

  9. More Serious Decisions • What classes you want to take in high school • If you will experiment with drugs/alcohol • What type of job do you want • Who you hang out with

  10. Values WHAT THINGS INFLUENCE OUR DECISIONS? • Friends – Peer Pressure • Values • Parents wishes • Luck • Media • Religion • Culture • Values are something that is of worth to you. It is significant, carries meaning, something you respect and can’t imagine being without.

  12. IBEAR Decision Making Model • I : Identify the situation • B: Brainstorm alternative solutions-choices • E: Evaluate choices - consequences for each- weigh PRO’S AND CON’S • A: Act on your decision • R: Re-evaluate – Did you make a good choice? We’re you happy with it?

  14. I B E A R • Step 1: IDENTIFY– what is the problem? what type of situation are you in?

  15. B - Brainstorm • Step 2: Brainstorm- possible choices. What are the different ways you can deal with the situation or problem?

  16. E = Evaluation Step 3: Evaluation - Determine the value of something After Brainstorming comes Evaluating – what are the possible outcomes. This is where you list the positive and negative results of the choice. However, some are more risky than others – that’s why it is important to STOP, LIST, EVALUATE before you ACT.

  17. A is for ACT • Step 4: ACT – Decide what you are going to do and take ACTION> but first ask yourself the following just before you act on it

  18. Consider this before Acting: H E L P • H (Healthful)-Is this decision good for my health? • E (Ethical)-Is this a safe decision? Can someone else get hurt? • L (Legal)-Is it allowed for someone your age? • P (Parents)-Would your parents/family approve? • If you can answer yes to these…… THEN GO FOR IT! You’ve made the right decision!!!! • If not, go back and evaluate

  19. 5. Re-Evaluate • Step 5: Re-Evaluate - re-evaluate your choice. • Reflect on the experience you had as a result of your choice. • Were you happy? • Would you do the same the next time? ONLY YOU KNOW THAT ANSWER!!

  21. Scenario #3 • Your best friend asks you to help him cheat on a test. He's never done it before and he promises he'll never do it again. What do you do?

  23. What would you do? • Yesterday, Sean and Marcus went downtown. On the way there, Sean asked Marcus to stop at a nearby apartment building while he ran inside to buy some marijuana. While they were walking downtown, Sean told Marcus he would meet him in five minutes at the coffee shop. At the coffee shop Sean shows Marcus a wad of bills and says, “I just unloaded some of that pot on some middle school kids.” On the way home, Sean decides to smoke in Marcus’s car and asks him to drive around the block a few times before letting him out. For the third time that month Marcus found himself driving Sean around town either to help him buy marijuana, sell it, and then get high without being caught. By the time Marcus got home he was fuming.

  24. Marcus starts thinking about his relationship with Sean. They have been friends since junior high, have played on the high school baseball team together, are going to be roommates this fall at college. Marcus has never liked it since Sean started smoking marijuana last year, but at least he does not pressure him to join. Since Sean is now dealing as well as using, and constantly using Marcus for rides he finds himself getting increasingly annoyed with the entire situation. What can Marcus do?
