  1. Inventors and Scientists Shale Oil Explorers Challenge

  2. Why? • To develop a range of skills: • research – internet and book based • independent working • presentation – written and oral • working to deadlines

  3. Are you up for the challenge? • History is a fascinating topic however it is not just about hearing stories from the past. • To be a HISTORIAN you have to be able to interpret sources, gather information and be able to explain the impact of an event or person on society.

  4. Shale Oil Explorers Challenge • To research and present your findings on an individual involved in shale mining in West Lothian. • You need to choose someone who has left a lasting impression. You can choose anyone from the INVENTORS and SCIENTISTS section on the website.

  5. Time Scale • Your teacher will tell you how much time you will get to complete the challenge. • There will be some work to be completed at home. • You will need at least a period for your teacher to explain the challenge. • Some time to research your findings • You will also need time to present to the class.

  6. What am I expected to do? • For your chosen person you need to research about their life. • You need to cover: Who they are – biography of their life What they did to become well known Why they have left a lasting impression on shale mining in West Lothian and elsewhere. Ideally you will spend one period researching each of these three areas.

  7. What do I need to produce? Your challenge will be assessed under: WRITE, SAY, MAKE and DO. • You should produce the following: • Write – A written piece of work summarising your chosen person – approx 250 words which MUST be put into your own words. • Say-A short presentation (2 mins) to the class on your personal but not simply reading out your written summary. How you present this is up to you? • Make – A made object which is linked to your person. • Do-Your research has to come from at least 2 sources – one website and one book.

  8. How will I be assessed? • The table on the next page will explain what the teacher is looking for and what YOU should produce. • Everyone will be issued with a self-assessment sheet to complete the challenge.
