    28. 2 Schools of Thought Daoism Comes from Dao = “the way.” Believed that people should avoid interfering with nature and each other. Laozi wrote a book teaching that power & wealth are unnecessary. Legalism Political philosophy that people need to be controlled. It is unconcerned with religion or individual thought but always ready for war. They put their ideas into place throughout China.

    42. Family Life in Han Social rank did not reflect prosperity nor did hard work. Strong family life was stressed. Felt this would help get the people to obey the emperor.

    43. Family Life in Han Men – Head of household. Got jobs on respect they showed their elders. Not obeying elders was a crime.

    44. Family Life in Han Women – had to obey husbands. Girls – inferior to boys.

    45. Government 1st emperor – Liu Bang – stopped Legalism, lowered taxes, and gave land to supporters. Wudi took over and brought back a central government. Offiical philosophy became Confucianism. He built a univeristy that taught Confucian ideals.

    49. Buddhism As the Han dynasty died, people looked to religion. The trade routes brought Indian Buddhists in contact with the Chinese. Chinese then spread the teachings throughout China. Both rich and poor embraced Buddhism. (ex. – of diffusion)
