PIG FARMERS OF AMERICA Members Jessie, Elena, Kyle, and Nick
Problem • There is benzene in Wellmont’s only water source. • PFA is a suspected polluter
Mission • To find the true contaminator • Prove PFA innocent • Keep Wellmont’s only water source safe
Benzene • Colorless • Flammable • Toxic • Gas • Sweet Smelling
Benzene Levels • High- Lots of benzene over .004 • Low- Some benzene under .004 • Negligible- So little benzene that it doesn’t make a difference
Wells • Test- tests water • Production- gives water used
Groundwater Flow • Found under surface • Comes from precipitation and surface water • Aquifer-readily available ground water • Groundwater flows downhill • Flows perpendicular to contour lines on a topographic map
Suspects • Kem Kleen- a • Corn and Soybean Farm- b • Town Landfill- c • Gas/Service Station- d • Excon- e • Coal Mine- g • Factory Pig Farm- h • Storm Water Runoff- i • Sewage Treatment Plant- f
Suspects We Eliminated • 6 suspects’ runoff water doesn’t flow into any of the test wells. The six suspects are: • Kem Kleen • Corn and Soybean Farm • Town Landfill • Gas/Service Station • Storm Water Runoff • Sewage Treatment Plant • Flow from coal mine through test wells showed negligible levels of benzene.
Test Wells • Jessie will show you on the screen where we put our test wells
PFA Not Guilty The test well results for benzene were: PFA: Negligible EXCON: High 0.008mg/L
The Culprit • We came to the conclusion that Excon is the culprit. • The test well directly in front of Excon had a high level of benzene. • The other wells it flowed through had a high or low level of benzene and no negligible levels.
