  1. Kyle

  2. Basic elements to build a successful PODD communicator with a proven approach as developed by Gayle Porter and Linda Burkhart.

  3. See child see book Establish the habit that the PODD communication book is always with Kyle. Communication can and should happen anywhere so Kyle will feel confident to speak in all environments. Kyle’s favorite places to communicate… in bed and playing on the floor!

  4. Modeling “Children will learn to use their PODD communication book in they way they experience others using it by modeling”. Gayle Porter, creator of PODD

  5. The most important thing to do with Kyle is to MODEL with him all day at all possible times, so that he sees it being used interactively and naturally. #1 modeling with Linda & Kyle

  6. Practicing and modeling using PODD will teach Kyle how to communicate and the desire to communicate interesting and different words to say. #2 Practicing & modeling

  7. Modeling everywhere in all environments and all situations to show it is okay to talk everywhere.

  8. Model your own novel message and do not try to create a message for Kyle. • Be sure to model initiation and always begin with “I have something to say”. #3 Model novel message

  9. It is ok to model by direct selecting because it is efficient and natural. Model by full auditory with visual column scanning whenever possible. direct selecting full model #4 #5

  10. Initiating • Respond to all forms of initiation as intent to communicate. •Responding will build Kyle’s confidence to communicate

  11. Rules • PODD is for communication only, not to be used for testing, knowledge validation or making choices. • Don’t ask random questions and expect a response. Kyle has not mastered answering random questions on topics he did not initiate, or that are not in the context of the current communication exchange taking place.

  12. Rules continued • If Kyle gives a response, accept it, don’t question it. If you truly don’t get the response, let him know that you didn’t understand and ask if he can tell you again. This should only happen rarely. • Once Kyle initiates, acknowledge you see that he has something to say by getting the PODD book immediately without any other talking. Try to make sure there is no time delay and try not to speak, so he doesn’t lose what he wants to say.

  13. Communication is the essence of life” ASHA 1991, pg. 9.
