  1. QuikSCAT Project Status June 5, 2006

  2. QuikSCAT Project Status • QuikSCAT spacecraft, instrument and ground system continue to function well and are meeting mission requirements • Aging of the scatterometer antenna bearings is the highest mission risk • Friction in the bearings fluctuates, but continues to return to nominal “comfort zone” levels • Margin remains on the motor torque capacity; spin rate is not effected • Data series is now nearly seven years long • Improved science data products have been developed and will be released publicly in July • Full mission reprocessing should complete by the end of 2006 • NASA budget provides for continuing the QuikSCAT mission through FY2009 • Budget for FY08 and FY09 are subject to the 2007 Senior Review • Ocean Vector Winds Science Team was re-competed in 2005 • 22 science investigations have been funded for 4 years beginning April 2006 • Next team meeting is July 5-7, 2006 in Salt Lake City

  3. New/Reprocessed Data Products • Changes include: • Refinements to wind retrieval • Model function was adjusted to boost high wind speeds • 12.5 km sigma0 and wind vectors (in addition to standard 25 km) • Improved rain flagging • Higher resolution land masking • Improved error bars • Reprocessed data products were evaluated by subset of OVWST • Conclusions and recommendations : • Rain flag looks good and is ready for full release • 25 km and 12.5 km resolution winds are credible and ready for full release • Don’t attempt to be more aggressive on land flag • Smooth echo tracking to minimize side effects on land and ice • Scale error bar estimates and evaluate them relative to co-located buoy data • OK to begin reprocessing as soon as possible and begin using new algorithms on QuikSCAT daily products when ready • NOAA near real time data processing • Code has been updated to include the new science product features • Evaluation by NOAA is in process
