  1. Worship • Def: Reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred. • Worship comes from old English word “weorthscipe” that basically means “worth-ship” or assigning worth to something. • Worship therefore has to do with what we decide to be the most important in our lives, what holds the highest worth.

  2. Worship • There is a fierce competition for the top spot of importance and adoration in our lives • Whoever gets the most of our time, attention, longing, desire, respect, honor, hope, adoration, love, homage, sacrifice and dedication becomes the “god” that receives our worship.

  3. The question is not whether or not we worship, but who we worship! Everybody worships someone/something!

  4. Worship • People will be transformed into the image of what they worship; even if they make them with their own hands • Psalm 115:8 (ESV) 8 Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

  5. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV) But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. • Worshipping God will transform us into His image! • Worshipping God is beholding His glory “as in the mirror” • The question is, where do we point our mirror?

  6. True Worship and Idolatry • We can point the mirror to God the creator, which is the only correct direction and will result in our transformation. • We can point the mirror to the creation instead of the creator; this is called IDOLATRY. Today, more than ever before, celebrity culture promotes it. We want to be like them. • We can point it to ourselves, which is SELF IDOLATRY or narcissism. “Believe in yourself” became the popular mantra of this generation.

  7. We can point the mirror to the creation instead of the creator; this is called IDOLATRY. Today, more than ever before, celebrity culture promotes it. We want to be like them. • Today, we shift from following ROLE MODELS to following CELEBRITIES

  8. We can point it to ourselves, which is SELF IDOLATRY or narcissism. “Believe in yourself” became the popular mantra of this generation.

  9. The 10 Commandments • Exodus 20:3-5 (NIV) • 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. • 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, …

  10. The 10 Commandments • Turning our mirrors to anything other than the creator is to create an idol. • 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything … for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, … • He is jealous because He loves us and have great plans to bless us…

  11. “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.” Blaise Pascal
