  3. New Deal effects on minorities • Last hired, first fired • Did not receive equal wages • Few received social security

  4. Politics Shift • Minority vote which had traditionally gone Republican shifts to Democrat in the 1930’s

  5. Role of Government Expands • Playing a Larger Role in the Economy • Gone are the days when gov. stays out of business • Rejection of laissez faire • Accepted responsibility for spurring economic growth

  6. Role of Government Expands • Creating a Welfare State • Major change in government policy • Government assumes responsibility for every citizen • This will grow greatly over time • This very debate divides liberals and conservatives today

  7. Restoring the Environment • Many programs helped the environment or at least gave people a place to enjoy it • A few hurt(TVA)

  8. Changing the Nature of the Presidency • Gave the executive branch much more power • Radio and relationship with the press will set standards for future presidents • Presidential term limits

  9. Modern Day Critics • Created a large federal government • Created make work jobs and hurt free market • Paying people not to farm • Deficit Spending • Court Packing
