Tool chains for design-control-optimization • Problem Statement • Models of building energy and control systems require thousands of parameters that get refined and changed during design, construction and operation. • Building simulation programs are “stand-alone” applications that were not designed for integration with BIM, controls analysis tools, code generation for embedded systems, and models from different domains. • The buildings industry uses different tools • for preliminary design, detailed design, energy analysis, system sizing, controls design and fault detection and diagnostics, and • for modeling of different physical domains, • which requires time-consuming reentry of parameters, loss of data and inconsistency of data across the building life cycle. • Key Deliverables • Short term (<3yrs; using existing computational resources) • Modular modeling platform and tool chain that separates concerns between modeling, numerical solution, analysis and computational hardware. • Models of different domains with application program interfaces (APIs) that enable: parameterization of mathematical models from BIM; integration with other domain-specific models, with controls analysis tools, with optimization packages, with code-generation software and with controls design and optimization packages; and scaling from embedded systems to high-performance computers. • Long term (5-10yrs; using new computational resources) • Compiler technologies linking tool chains and automatic code generation. • Context-aware modular modeling platform and tool chain that reconfigures models based on the requested analysis (such as building massing, controls design). • Benefits: • Improved speed of model-based design of building, energy and control system. • Sustained visibility on performance targets and predicted performance across whole building life cycle. • Models and data reusable by different discipline experts across the building life-cycle. • More use of models and reduce deployment effort/cost.
