  1. Minerals, What are they? Unit 1: Lesson 1: SPI 0707.7.1

  2. Today’s Objectives • I will conceptualize what a mineral is • Conceptualize - Form a concept or idea of (something): "we can more easily conceptualize speed in miles per hour”. • I will understand the difference between a mineral and a non-mineral • I will begin to use academic vocabulary associated with this unit

  3. Start-up Activity– Academic Vocabulary Foldable Mineral:A naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure. Igneous Rock: rock formed by the solidification of molten magma. Sedimentary Rock: rock formed from consolidated clay sediments. Metamorphic Rock: rock altered by pressure and heat. The Rock Cycle: An idealized cycle of processes undergone by rocks in the earth's crust.

  4. Qualifications of a mineral Naturally Formed All minerals are formed naturally.

  5. Qualifications of a mineral Inorganic All minerals are non-living

  6. Qualifications of a mineral Solid Minerals can not be gases or solids

  7. Qualifications of a mineral Crystalline Structure All minerals are crystals. Usually the same shape as its chemical composition.

  8. To be or not to be a mineral These are the Questions

  9. To be or not to be a mineral #1 Is it formed in nature?

  10. To be or not to be a mineral #2 Is it nonliving material?

  11. To be or not to be a mineral #3 Is it solid?

  12. To be or not to be a mineral #4 Does it have a crystalline structure?
