Eye Splice (Three-Strand): An eye splice is the best way to form a permanent loop in the end of a rope. • Eye splices are used more often than any other type of splice. • This splice will retain approximately 90 to 95% of the rope strength when properly applied. • This splice can be made to any size, with or without hardware. Splicing Right-Hand Laid Line:Begin an eye splice by unraveling the three strands approximately 8 inches. • When splicing large lines or synthetics such as nylon or Dacron, the strand ends may become frayed and difficult to work with. To guard against this, wrap them tightly with a turn of tape or a seizing. • Identify the side of the rope (“the front”) which should meet the standing part when forming the eye. Hold the rope so you can clearly recognize the “center” strand. • For the sake of clarity the following instructions will be color coded. 3/8 inch diameter nylon rope will be used. *On Right-Hand Laid Rope the top of the spiral is on the right side. Right Right Center Left “Front” Center “Front” The “front” is identified when the center strand moves between, not away, from the left & right strands. The left & right strands are identified from the “back” of the rope when the end is in contact with the standing part. Left

Lay the unraveled end over the standing part of the line with the strands lying naturally (“front” of end in contact with and over the standing part). • Tuck the center strand (green) under a strand on the standing part. • Follow by tucking the left strand (blue) under the strand to the left or next strand up from the strand you just went under with the center strand. • Always work straight up (or down) the rope with each successive tuck. • The only combination that will work is over one strand and under one strand, always working against the lay of the rope. 1 2 Tuck the center strand under a strand on the standing part. After tucking the center strand, find the left strand and take it over the strand you just put the center strand under and tuck it under the next strand.

  4. To complete the first full tuck, take the right strand (black) around the standing part to the right and tuck it under the remaining strand (over and under the same strand). 4 3 • Pull on the three strand ends to smooth out the tuck before continuing with the remaining tucks. 5

  5. Continue tucking each strand over-under-over for the required number of tucks. Smooth out the splice as you go along. 8 6 9 7 Finished Eye Splice on Stranded Nylon Rope
