  2. Focus Question: How do ideas and values affect the development of civilizations and continue to affect societies today?

The Zhou (Joh) Dynasty • Began in 1050 B.C. after defeating the Shang • Worshiped a god called Tien (tyen) or “Heaven” • Believed that founder , HouJi(Ho Gee) discovered agriculture • Zhou Kings believed the god heaven disapproved of the Shang King and ordered them to take over and create a new dynasty. • Mandate of Heaven- the idea that Heaven determines who should claim rule over China; Kings must show virtues to keep the mandate

  4. Division of Classes Society divided into 3 classes of families: King and family Nobles and families Peasants and families Military service for King Gives land to nobles Protects Peasants Farm land, serve nobles

  5. Read the poem below. What does it make you think about life as a peasant? “Big rat! Big rat! Don’t eat our millet! For three years we’ve spoiled you, You haven’t paid us back. It’s got to the point where we’ll Leave you and go to that happy land. Happy land! Happy land! There we’ll find a place.”

Decline of the Zhou~ A legend • Invaded by people from the North and West • King You ordered that fires be lit on the hills around the capital when an attack seemed likely. • However, he lit the fires several times when there was not an attack just to see if the nobles would send their armies to the capital. • When there was an attack the nobles, didn’t send their armies, thinking it was another false alarm. • King You died and the capital was overtaken by invaders.

Warring States Period • A period of many wars that occurred between the change of dynasty • This also led to new developments in government • Kingdom of Chu (Joo)- created the first bureaucracy • Nobles were not given land, people were chosen based on their ability not how much money they had. • 535 B.C.- King of Zheng wrote down a set of laws and inscribed them on a large bronze vessel for all to see. He felt that specific laws were needed to keep order in society.

Confucius ~ Ideas and Teachings • Confucius (551-479 B.C.) , AKA- Kong Fuzi (KOONG FOOzuh) Master Kong • Son of a government official, exiled from Lu • Legend says he wandered for 25 years • Book of sayings “Lunyu” (LUNYOO) or “Analects” • Based his views on family values • Filial Piety- the kind treatment, respect, and honor of parents by children

  9. What does this mean? “If a ruler himself is upright, all will go well without orders. But if he himself is not upright, even though he gives orders they will not be obeyed.”

  10. Confucius~ Philosophy • He opposed the new forms of government and bureaucracy • Did not think punishments were a good way to keep order • Believed a ruler should try and set a good example for his people. • Rulers could gain loyalty by showing subjects love or ren • Confucianism spread throughout eastern Asia after his death.

  11. Sayings of Confucius: • What do each of the sayings mean? • Would Confucius agree or disagree?

Cause and Effect • Cause- something that makes something else happen • Effect- what happens after(because of the cause) • This is important not just for understanding events in history but also for making personal decisions. • Many events in history have more than one cause and more than one effect.

  13. The Fall of the Zhou Dynasty: Cause & Effect • Analyze the chart. Then answer the following questions. • What caused King You to send signals to the nobles? What was the effect? • Why did the nobles not respond when the Zhou capital was invaded? • What happened as a result of the nobles failing to respond?
