  2. Introduction • So are you thinking of applying for a job in the media industry? Are you fully prepared? This Power Point presentation will prepare you in just a few slides. Applying for a job in the United Kingdom to the Media Industry can be more difficult than you think due to the rise of interest in the sector by the younger generation so you need to make sure you do everything correctly.Firstly, you need to know that some companies require you to apply for a job online where you will fill out an application and attach your CV which will then be submitted to them directly. When submitted you will receive an email saying you have applied and if they are interested, they will mail you back or give you a call. Another way is to go directly into the company and hand your CV to the company manager or supervisor who will then take your CV if they are looking for employees. If they like your CV they will shortlist you along with the other people that have applied and decide who is the best option for them.   3. Preparation for Employment • Interviews for a job in the Media Industry are completely different to ones you would normally have for a regular job. The reason behind it is because in media interviews, you can express yourself throughout music, art, photography and many other ways depending on the job you apply for. These interviews can be either very stressful or surprisingly relaxed depending on preparation. In these interviews you need to impress the employer to show them that you are eager to learn and have the urge to be successful and help their business grow. You can do this multiple ways. First of all you will need to do research on the sector you are going to apply for and then do research on the job role you have applied for and revise this as the employer will want to know what you already know and if you are really interested. Lets be honest, if you are interested in something, you will do your research. Another way is having a big portfolio of work ready to present to your employer. In the media industry, employers are interested in what you have worked on in terms of projects and if you have been practicing to make yourself better. All employers want to see your potential. This is one reason why you need to be working on projects in education and outside. If you have no portfolio you stand no chance.

Many people think that dressing for an interview isn’t the important part & believe it doesn’t make a difference however, this is completely wrong. Appearance plays a massive factor in a job interview.Many teenagers or young adults don’t understand how crucial appearance is to employers. Teenagers/Young adults are so used to daily dress codes that they are afraid to change appearance for important interviews. A lot of teenagers go to interviews with Jeans, Spiked heels, trainers & tracksuits. Other bad habits they do Is chew gum, go with creased clothing or with their pants falling down. This is a massive mistake that teenagers make. So what are the right ways?The do’s of preparing your dress code:Depending on the sort of interview you are going to, you always need to look Smart or Casual Smart. Some jobs don’t require you to come in a suit, you can simply mix smart & casual.

  6. If your job is more of an office job or a more higher class job, always look smart. The most popular & most respected attire for men & woman are: Men's Interview Attire:-Solid color-conservative suit-White long sleeve shirt-Conservative tie-Dark socks, professional shoes-Very limited jewelryWomen's Interview Attire:-Solid color-conservative suit/Dress-Coordinated blouse-Moderate shoes-Limited jewelry-Neat, professional hairstyle Tan or light hosiery-Sparse make-up & perfume-Manicured nails-Portfolio or briefcaseIf the job is more of a casual job where you might not need to look completely smart you can always add casual clothing, in this case Jeans, a nice plain shirt & shoes would be completely fine. However Ladies & Gentlemen, just be careful on how you wear the smart clothing. Employers don’t like ladies wearing Tight mini skirts or dresses & for men, never wear trousers that are really tight, never wear see-through clothing & always have all your buttons done.

  7. Interview Skills • Another important thing you will need to learn is interview skills as they are a crucial part of the interview. They are pretty simple but do need to be practiced. Here are 9 Interview skills you will need;Be mentally prepared – When going to an interview it is important that you always think positive and feel good about yourself. If you think about things that can go wrong, you will lose confidence and be frightened at the interview. This can be easily noticed by the employer. • Be Prepared Subject Wise – If you want to be confident during the interview, then be prepared. (Fail to prepare, prepare to fail). Do some research, prepare on the subject but don’t over prepare because they don’t expect you to know everything. Then you will be able to answer questions with ease. Friendly Attitude – It is very important that you have a friendly attitude when you go to an interview. You should be polite to everyone you meet at the interview site. Reason behind this, is that the employer might seek the opinion of others about you.

  8. Body Language – Always have positive body language and try to be unpretictable. Your posture is the most important as this will define your confidence. Always sit straight. Always make eye contact when answering questions as this will leave a good impression. Eye contact – Like mentioned above in Body language, always make eye contact when speaking or answering questions. Don’t make too much eye contact and make yourself look creepy. Too much is also not good.Shake Hands – Before the interview & after the interview, always shake hands. Don’t be scared to make the handshake firm if it is a male interviewer as this shows your confidence and positive attitude. If its a female employer, don’t make it too firm. Speak Clearly – Along with your posture, you need to speak clearly. If your posture is high and you speak with a low voice and feel shy, your positive impression will fail. Speak in an energetic and lively voice but dont shout. Along with this make sure you have clear speech so the employer understands. • Ask questions – Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview. Most people will listen to the employer and nod and agree with what they say because they are afraid to say something that the interview may not like however, don’t do that. If you have a question or want the employer to expand on what they said, ask the question. Always ask questions at the end of the interview. Don’t show urge – You should not show your excitement or show how eager you are for the job. You should show that you have more choices and chances so the employer is forced to want you to work for them and do the job for them. This will make your chances much higher.

  9. Interpersonal Skills • Interpersonal skills are very important to have as emplyers want every employee to have them. This is a crucial part of life that everyone learns as they grow up. Interpersonal skills are not only important in a workplace but also in social lives and this can determine your future. So what are they?These skills are skills you use in everyday life. -Verbal Communication – What we say and how we say it.-Non-Verbal Communication – What we communicate without words, example Body language.-Listening Skills – How we interpret both verbal and non verbal messages sent by others. -Negotiation – Working with others to find a mutually agreeable outcome.-Problem Solving – Working with others to identify, define & solve problems.-Decision Making – Exploring & analysing opinions to make decisions.-Assertiveness – Communication our ideas, values, ideas, beliefs, opinions, needs & wants.

  10. So how can you improve your interpersonal skills?Learn to listen – You need to make sure you know the difference between listening & hearing. Carefully listen to what others say verbally and non-verbally and make sure you understand the meanining.Choose your words – Be very aware of the words you use while talking to others. You could easily be misunderstood and confuse others. Always practice clarity & always seeks feedback to make sure people understood you. This can be practiced with family and friends. Relax – When we are nervous we tend to talk faster and less clear. Being tense and nervous is also evident to our body language & other non-verbal communication. Instead try to stay relaxed, speak clearly & make eye contact. Clarify – Show an interest to people that you are talking to. Ask them questions to clarify what they said so nothing is misunderstood. Empathies - Understand that other people may have different points of view. Try to see things from their perspective. You may learn something whilst gaining the respect and trust of others. Practice and use these techniques and your interpersonal skills will improve dramatically!

  11. Qualities & Skills • So what are skills and qualities? The 2 can be mixed up and some people think it’s the same thing however they are different. A Skill; A skill is basically something that you can learn by doing it over and over again over a period of time. For example, during education or work you will learn a variety of skills that you can use in the future for many different things. These skills can be things such as; Strong communication skills, Good writing skills, Good reading skills & confidence speaking in front of large crowds.A Quality; A quality is something you are born with that you will be good at. This quality will improve dramatically as you get older as it will be part of your personality and will be used on a daily basis. This is something that cant be learnt. A good example could be the quality of good listening. You can be born with good listening skills that will help you hear sounds, patterns in music & other things that a regular person wont be able to do. This will improve over time.
