A quick recap • Task: Put the events below from chapters 12-16 into the correct order • Title: Understanding chapters 12-16 of Holes • Some of the boys discuss their future jobs with Mr Pendanski • Stanley finds a bullet in the hole he has dug • He impresses X-Ray by suggesting that X-Ray keeps it until the next day to get the entire day off • Stanley moves one place forward in the line • The next day we meet The Warden • She insists the boys work hard to dig for more findings • Stanley learns that himself and the others are not just digging for ‘character’ building • Stanley receives a letter from home

  6. Reading on… • As you read the novel, make notes using the following headings; • What we learn about the plot: what happens • What we learn about the characters • Challenge/ Extension: Whilst reading chapter 20, consider how the Warden makes Stanley feel weak and intimidated.

Chapter 20: assessment lesson • How is The Warden presented in this chapter? • Include:- • What has happened previously and why Stanley is in The Warden’s hut • What The Warden makes Stanley go and get – the mystery • The way The Warden controls the conversation • What she says to Stanley • Her actions to him and to Mr Sir • How does Stanley react/ feel after this? • For each of the above find EVIDENCE from the book • Then EXPLAIN what it shows. How do you know this? What words prove your point?

Teacher example • In chapter 20 Stanley is scared of The Warden especially when she strikes Mr Sir across the face; “She stepped towards him and struck him across the face”. • In this example, the writer describes how The Warden hurts Mr Sir because he is so concerned about his sunflower seeds. The word/ verb “struck” shows how quick she lashes out almost without feeling. It presents The Warden as aggressive and violent. She is in control. • The Warden is also presented as powerful when…
