  1. Hamlet A revenge tragedy by William Shakespeare. ….And Julie Willis’s Block B English star students

  2. The play, set in Denmark, recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his Uncle Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet’s father, the King, and then taken the throne and married Hamlet’s mother. The play charts the journey of madness, both real and feigned – from overwhelming grief to seething rage – and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest and moral corruption. “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamlet http://www.david-tennant.com/temp/id200.html

  3. The Ghost of Hamlet’s Father (Act 1 Sc 1, sc4, sc5) How does the first scene set the mood and frame the action for the rest of the play? Act 1 Sc 1 http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet/section1.html

  4. The ghost of Hamlet’s father tells Hamlet he was killed by his brother and urges Hamlet to take revenge

  5. Hamlet was outraged when his mother married his Uncle Claudius, who then became King. But Hamlet had not suspected his uncle of murder….

  6. Everyone at court, including the king’s chamberlain, Polonius, notices Hamlet becoming mentally and emotionally unstable . Hamlet exaggerated his ‘madness’ so his Uncle and Polonius would not realise he was suspicious.

  7. Polonius sent spies to observe Hamlet

  8. Ophelia, Polonius’ daughter, suffered from Hamlet’s erratic behaviour. His feelings switched between love and tenderness (he had already slept with her, so she thought he loved her), and scorn.

  9. Polonius thought Hamlet’s apparent madness stemmed from his love of Ophelia, so he ordered her to steer clear of the crazy prince.

  10. Unable to trust anyone, Hamlet felt miserable and confused. He contemplates whether he should take his own life or that of his father’s murderer, Claudius. Why is the decision to fulfil his father’s need for vengeance so difficult for Hamlet? After all, as the heir to the throne, Hamlet should have become King of Denmark on the death of his father. What sort of King and leader would Hamlet have made? ‘To be or not to be: that is the question: Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune , or take up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them? ‘ (Act 1 Sc 3)

  11. “The play’s the thing, wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king” (Act 2 Sc 2 )
