  2. Does the book tell a good story? • The book is a tall tale, are stories written from someone’s imagination.  The story can be funny or silly.  They are filled with exaggerations, similes, metaphors, and lots of descriptive language.  It is always told as if it were true, even though the listeners know that the story could never really happen, but this is perhaps what makes it such a good story. Example 2 in book

  3. How accurate and complete are the facts? • There are two John Henrys, the actual man and the legend surrounding him. He was born a slave, worked as a laborer for the railroads after the Civil War, and died in his 30s, leaving behind a wife and a baby. He grew to stand 6 feet tall, 200 pounds - a giant in that day. He had an huge appetite, and an even greater skill for work. Example 1 in book

  4. Whose voices are missing? • Although the fictional text is not told from John Henry’s perspective it does give a few personal remarks by him. The voice of people who knew John Henry worked with and his family are not apart of this tale.

  5. Is the Language Authentic to the Time? • I believe the language is authentic to the time because during the this time was slavery. Many blacks during this time had an respectful tone to whites and improper English Ex. 3 in book
