  1. CHAPTER 2

  2. Character Analysis: Ralph as a Leader Characterization is the method used by a writer to develop how the character looks, acts, and thinks. This activity gives you an opportunity to study one character in more depth. By asking you to reread previous passages, it also gives you a chance to review. Examine what you know about Ralph thus far. Collect quotes that describe Ralph’s leadership abilities. Then, you’ll predict his success.

  3. Looking Back • Write at least two quotes from Chapter 1 that describes Ralph’s leadership abilities. • Thinking About the Present • Think about the chapter you’re reading now. Find two more quotes that elaborate on Ralph’s leadership abilities. • Looking Ahead • Based on what you know so far, explain whether or not Ralph will be a successful leader. What qualities help him? Which ones hinder him? Does his success depend only on himself? Why or why not? (approx. 50 words)

  4. Theme Analysis: Death and Destruction A theme is a general concept or idea, such as love, justice, or sorrow. One way to help you think of themes is to complete the following sentence: “This is a book about ____________.” When events like death and destruction have a prominent place in a story, the author generally intends for the reader to carefully think about them. Start thinking about the ways that death and destruction have already been seen on the island. This will give you an opportunity to find details in the story, and it demonstrates how important this theme is to the author.

  5. Directions: complete the chart with your analysis of this key theme.
