  4. Objectives • Determine which foods will increase your blood sugars • Make a balanced plate of food with appropriate amount of carbohydrate servings • Pick out where CHO are on a food label

  7. What is a Carb? • Grains: • Breads and Pastas • Rice • Cereal • Malasadas/cakes • Starchy Vegetables • Potatoes • Corn/Peas • Poi/Taro • Beans • Fruit (Fresh/Canned): • Berries • Citrus Fruits • Papaya/Mango • 100% Fruit Juice • Dairy: • 1% or skim milk • Yogurt • Fruit vs Plain • Ice Cream

  8. How much of the Carbs can I have?

  9. How much at meal time? • 1-2 servings of Carbs at each meal • Snacks = 1 carb serving plus protein • Fruit with peanut butter • ½ sandwhich – egg/chicken/tuna salad • String cheese and fruit/crackers • 1 yogurt

  10. What’s a serving size? • 1 Serving Size of Carbs = 15 g • 1 slice of toast • ½ cup rice • 1 small fruit (apple, orange ½ banana) • 1 cup skim milk • If all else fails use palm of hand 15 grams
