  1. GPiBS (Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences) is offered through the Graduate College at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. • All students complete course work and then select a specific program or department for their Ph.D. research in biomedical science.

Typical Path for GPiBS Students Apply and get accepted to GPiBS Year 1 Classes - Journal Clubs - Seminars - Lab Rotations Pick a Lab Continue Coursework and Take Qualifying Exam Year 2 Formulate a Research Proposal Carry out Research, Present Findings and Publish Papers Years 3,4,(5) Defend Dissertation and Receive PhD

Apply and Get Accepted to GPiBS • Complete the online application (https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=uok-hs) • Print a copy of completed application and send the following to Brenda Callahan (address listed on GPiBS website): • Printed Application • Official Transcripts • 3 letters of recommendation • Goals/Purpose Statement • GRE Scores • International Students also need to send TOEFL Scores and WES review

  6. GPiBS Admission Requirements • Undergraduate degree in relevant area • 3.0 GPA in last 60 credit hours • GRE required • Foreign applicants - ≥213 TOEFL • 3 letters of recommendation • Purpose/Goals statement

  7. Courses Strongly RecommendedBefore Entering GPiBS • Biochemistry – 1 semester • Organic Chemistry with lab – 2 semesters • Physics – 1 semester • Calculus – 1 semester • Upper Division Biology classes such as: • Physiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology…

  8. GPiBS Program - Year 1 • Fall semester • Molecular systems I and II (M-Th 8:30-11:00) • Cellular Systems I and II (M-Th 8:30-11:00) • Three journal clubs of choice (Friday 9-10) • Scientific integrity (Friday 10:30-11:30) • Two laboratory rotations • Spring semester • Immunology (2) • Molecular basis of disease (1) • Integrative physiology (1) • Neurobiology (1) • Seven other selective courses from a wide range of topics • One and possibly two laboratory rotations

Laboratory Rotations - Year 1 • Picking Rotation Mentors during first year • Mentor list for laboratory rotations can be found on the GPiBS website http://w3.ouhsc.edu/gpibs/ • Program Faculty link allows you to look over the research interests of over 80 current mentors (the list is always expanding) • Choose a laboratory and enter a specific department for the remainder of your studies and research training

  10. How Do I Pay for Graduate Education? • Full tuition waiver • Stipend - $21,500 per year • Health Insurance benefits

Research Scholar and McNair Awards • NSF EPSCoR Scholars Program • $5,000 award for outstanding applicant (salary supplement for first year) • GPiBS Research Scholar Award • $2,000 award for up to three GPiBS students at end of first year (travel, meetings, books…) • McNair Scholar Award • $5,000 stipend supplement for 4 years • $500 in either travel or research support • Must have successfully completed an undergraduate McNair program and have at least a 3.50 grade point average in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework • http://w3.ouhsc.edu/graduate/wordfiles/McNair_Allumni_Awards.doc

Summer Research Opportunities QUALIFICATIONS • Applicants must have completed two years of undergraduate study at an institution in the United States and must be in good standing. • A record of high academic achievement in science course work is expected. • Two letters of recommendation from faculty mentors or instructors are required. • A one page statement of career goals is required that includes a brief discussion of the applicant’s interest in biomedical research.

Summer Research Opportunities ORIENTATION • SURE, INBRE, and NARCH summer programs last nine weeks during the months of June and July. • Participants will devote a minimum of 40-hours a week to the program. • Participants arrive in Oklahoma City on the weekend preceding the start of their program where they will begin orientation sessions that will include training for laboratory safety, radiation safety, library resources, etc.

  16. Summer Research Opportunities COURSE CREDIT, STIPEND, and DEADLINES • Participants will have the opportunity to enroll in three semester hours of undergraduate credit in Advanced Studies in Biomedical Research - BMSC 4113. Tuition will be waived; however, students will be responsible for all applicable fees. • All summer programs provide stipends of at least $3,000. • Application deadlines are February 1st, 2007 for SURE and NARCH and November, 2006 for INBRE.
