  1. LOVE IN MOVIES

FHS 2450-042 Human Sexuality Final Project Rachel Oshley
  2. What is Love? Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible - it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession could. ~ Barbara de Angelis (Online)
  3. Two Types of Love Passionate love which is known as infatuation or romantic love. Companionate love is less intense then passionate love but forms a deep attachment and affection because of familiarity.(Crooks & Baur)
  4. Love in Movies Love is hard to define and measure. Movies portray love in several ways and often can give people a false impression of what love is and how it takes place. Ultimately it is up to the viewers to decide what they think love is.
  5. Questions to be Answered After Each Movie Clip 1. In the medium you viewed and recorded, are the portrayals mostly companionate or passionate love or some combination of the two? 2. Do you think your selected medium “clips” portray a realistic view of love and partnership? Why or why not? 3. What are the dangers of relying on media definitions of love and relationships?
  6. The Notebook
  7. Analysis I think this movie shows a combination of both passionate and companionate love. The relationship starts out with infatuation but then grows to be a deeper love throughout their relationship. I feel this movie shows a pretty realistic way of love because of the great transitions of love. It shows them liking each other and dating, to then letting each other go their separate ways. Over time they reunite and move from passionate to companionate love. The dangers of believing this portrayal of love is that it may give people the false hope that people will do those grand romantic gestures such as building a house for the girl he loved, in hopes that it will bring her back to him. Another example is the way the old couple is portrayed and how hard the man works everyday to try and bring back his wife's memory who has Alzheimer's.
  8. Serendipity
  9. Analysis I believe this movie is based on a passionate love. Its all about love at first sight and fate. This movie has some realistic parts to such as how you first meet and start dating a person, but then it gets a little too unbelievable in how they go to great lengths to search for each other just because they couldn’t let that first dating experience go. This film will give the viewers the wrong impression that love at first sight is the most important and that with fate you will be able to reconnect with a person several years later.
  10. Disney’s Enchanted
  11. Analysis This movie portrays passionate love. It shows that you will meet your true love by singing to them at first sight. The realistic thing about this movie is it shows how not all love stories start and end the same as the classic fairytales. I like how they do the twist with fictional characters finding love in the real world. The movie danger is that people may gain a false sense of what love is and how easy it is to find true love.
  12. Cinderella
  13. Analysis This classic fairytale shows passionate love. The princess and prince meet at the royal ball and become infatuated with each other. There really isn’t anything realistic in this movie other then the portrayal of infatuation. The dangers of believing this type of love in this movie is the whole false sense of love, which is that love at first sight will end with a happily ever after. No relationship is as easy as singing a song and finding the right foot to match the shoe.
  14. Sleepless In Seattle
  15. Analysis This film shows a passionate love and how a relationship can be formed out of unusual circumstances. This is a somewhat realistic story of love. Nowadays it is common for people to meet online and then later meet in person. This media can send the wrong impression of love. I don’t think its healthy to stalk a stranger then try and form a relationship.
  16. Survey Information The Survey was entitled Love in Movies Survey and consisted of 10 questions. This survey had a total of 10 participants. The participants were my friends, family and coworkers. The age range was 17-56. There were only 3 possible choices; which were yes, no or indifferent.
  17. Love in Movies Survey 1. Do you know what love is? 2 .Do movies in general portray love correctly? 3. Do you feel that movies set people up for to high of love expectations? 4. Do movies make you wish that your partner was more romantic? 5. After watching the first movie clip did you feel that it portrayed love and relationships correctly? 6. After watching the second movie clip do you feel that love really is left up to fate? 7. After watching the third movie clip do you think that song is accurate in telling you That’s How You Know its love? 8. After watching the fourth movie clip do you believe in love at first sight ? 9. After watching the fifth movie clip do you feel that love can be found by following your gut feeling even if it makes to do crazy things? 10 .Do you believe in love?
  18. Love in Movies Survey Results
  19. In Conclusion I feel that love is shown in many different ways and experienced differently from one person to the next. I think that movies do a decent job at trying to portray relationships and love. Although I do think that it can give people too high of expectations when it comes down to their own romance and relationships.
