On October 5, 1863, one attacked the USS New Ironclad and was able to disable it with a 65lb. Torpedo. Below is the 40ft. Attempts were given up by the Navy.

  8. The first great battle of the Civil War was fought at Manassa, Virginia. This is also referred to the Battle of Bull Run. It was fought in Wilmer McLean’s front yard. A Union cannonball came down the chimney in the kitchen and exploded into the families supper. Making the family and the Confederate general staying there have a different meal. In 1863, Wilmer McLean moved his family to Appomattox, Virginia to escape the battlefield. In April, 1865 Lee surrendered to Grant in Wilmer McLean’s Parlor.

  9. Misfits of the Desert – Jefferson Davis as United States Secretary of War in 1855 appropriated $30,000 to the U.S. Army Camel Corp. Camels were brought to the Southwest in 1857. The camels were soon sold off as the experiment was not successful. They were used in Nevada from 1861-1871 to haul wood and lumber to the Comstock mines. This also proved unsuccessful because the Nevada desert has rugged hills and rough growth. The camels could never adjust. Nevada Historical Marker 199 can be viewed in Dayton.
