  1. Who were/ was Betty’s family members? Reverend Parris & Abby

  2. For Real…Betty Parris' mother was not dead, but very much alive at the time. She died in 1696, four years after the events. Why was this changed?

  3. Where was Betty during the trials? At the court or at Parris’ home

  4. For Real…Soon after the legal proceedings began, Betty was shuttled off to live in Salem Town with Stephen Sewall's family. Stephen was the clerk of the Court, brother of Judge Samuel Sewall. Why was this changed?

  5. Who was included in the Parris Family? The Rev, Betty and Abby

  6. For Real…The Parris family also included two other children -- an older brother, Thomas (b. 1681), and a younger sister, Susannah (b. 1687) -- not just Betty and her relative Abigail, who was probably born around 1681.Why would this have been changed?

  7. How old were John and Abby? Miller’s version represents Abby as 16ish and John as being in his mid-30’s!

  8. For Real…Miller admits in the introduction to the play that he boosted Abigail Williams' age to 17 even though the real girl was only 11, but he never mentions that John Proctor was 60 .Why did he change it?

  9. What was Proctor’s profession? Miller made him a farmer…

  10. For Real…John owned the town Tavern! Why would Miller change this?

  11. How old was Elizabeth and how long had John and her been together? Mid-30’s and this was their first marriage.

  12. For Real…Elizabeth was in her 40’s and John’s 3rd wife.

  13. What was the name of the only Putnam child? Ruth!

  14. For Real…Her name was Ann… but that would have been way too confusing for the readers. And…There were really 6 Putnam kids alive at the time of the trials- but come on… 7 dead babies sounds better!

  15. How many judges were there? Miller presented two!

  16. For Real…There were at least 8 and 5 had to be sitting for court to be in session. Danforth and Hawthorne were a combo of the 8.

  17. Who were the last people to be hanged in Salem? Miller presented Rebecca, Martha and John which symbolized the end of the trials.

  18. For Real…Rebecca Nurse was hanged on July 19, John Proctor on August 19, and Martha Corey on September 22 -- not all on the same day on the same gallows. Why did Miller feel the need to change this?

  19. The hysteria did not die out "as more and more people refused to save themselves by giving false confessions," as the epilogue of the movie states. The opposite was true: more and more people gave false confessions to save themselves as it became apparent that confession could save one from the noose.

  20. What ended the trials was the intervention of Governor William Phips.

  21. The big question! Did Abby and John really have an affair?

  22. NONo, the real people didn't, but the characters in the play did. Miller made that up.
