  1. Micro-Hydro Turbine Team 5 Scott Craig Cody Maher Jesse Ross Brian Van Stratum

  2. Visit to C.H. Corn Power Plant • February 1, 2007 • Located 20 miles southwest of Tallahassee at southern tip of Lake Talquin • One of only two hydroelectric plants in state of Florida

  3. Visit to C.H. Corn Power Plant • Three turbines – one Kaplan and two propeller • Maximum power generation of 12 MW • Typical power output is about 3 MW • 12 MW is about 3% of Tallahassee’s typical power need of 425 MW

  4. Visit to C.H. Corn Power Plant • Built in 1929 by West Florida Power Company • Abandoned as a power plant in 1970 • Refurbished in 1981 by City of Tallahassee as a hydroelectric demonstration project • Became fully operational in 1985 under City of Tallahassee Electric Utility Services

  5. Visit to C.H. Corn Power Plant

  6. Islanded Battery Operation Water Wheel Rectifier Bridge User Demands Generator Head Inverter DC Disconnect Nautilus Battery Dissipating Load Battery Monitor Charge Controller

  7. Islanded Operation w/ No Batteries User Demands Generator Head AC Controller and/or Inverter Dissipating Load

  8. Grid-Connected Battery Operation Water Wheel DC Signal DC Disconnect Inverter Nautilus Net Meter Battery Charge Controller Dissipating Load Utility Battery Monitor

  9. Utility Grid Connected System w/ No Battery Net Meter Water Wheel AC Controller AC Signal Dissipating Load Nautilus

  10. Grid Point Connect Represents a Simple and Flexible Solution User Demands Utility Gridpoint Connect (Can operate in grid connected or islanded mode) or Renewable Energy

  11. Gridpoint • All in one design • Integrated inverter, controller, power electronics • Plug and play • Battery storage • Circuit protection • Online monitoring • Currently designed for photovoltaics(interest sparked)

  12. Turbine Options & Costs • ABS Alaskan (www.absak.com) • Nautilus: 3 turbines needed each priced at $10,600 Total = $31,800 Power 3 x 1900 W = 5700 W 50 year expected life • Neptune: 3 turbines needed each priced at $XXXXX Total = $XXXX Power 3 x 1900 W = 5700 W 50 year expected life.

  13. Turbine Options & Costs • Energy Systems & Design (www.microhydropower.com) • LH1000: 9 turbines needed each priced at $2,625 • Total = $23,625 • Only one year warranty

  14. Water Wheel Costs • Water Wheel Factory • Overshot design • 9 ft diameter, all steel structure • $12,000 • Also considered is a breast wheel design, doubling the price of the original wheel

  15. No Longer Under Consideration • Voith Siemens Turbine • $500,000 • Construction Costs • Sponsor only requires component selection and general layout

  16. Turbine and Water Wheel Decision Matrix

  17. Savings

  18. IEEE 1547 • Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems • 250kW or more requires monitoring • Isolation device required • Frequency must be within 0.5Hz of grid • Voltage must be within 10% of grid voltage • Phase angle must be within 20° of grid phase

  19. Website • www.fsuhydroturbine.com • Previous presentations, fall report, etc available on site • In process of mirroring site to www.eng.fsu.edu/ME_senior_design/2007/team5/index.html • Converting to html
