  5. There are 39 Four-Year Universities and Liberal Arts Colleges who have opened their doors to individuals with significant disabilities The Cutting-Edge Pilot Project is truly on the cutting-edge. This is the first college in Wisconsin to engage in inclusion for adult learners!

  6. Independent Inclusive Supports Characteristics of the Independent Inclusive Supports Model: • Individualized services, accommodations and supports to ensure access, participation; • College programs include certificate programs, internships and degrees; • Student-centered support services, based on student choices and preferences; • Student may be matriculated and working toward completion of a course of study resulting in employment; • Job training; • Funding is shared by college, local public school district, etc. • Students with significant disabilities can continue with their education after exiting the school system, because they are not affiliated with a “program”. (Stodden, 2004)

Target Population:Individuals with Significant Disabilities who would not otherwise be able to attend college 7 Cutting-Edge Students • Who want to attend college; • Who have a developmental disability (autism, Aspergers syndrome, cognitive disability, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy); • Between the ages of 19-25; • Who live in the Madison area; • Who are employed in community businesses; • Who commute to school; • Taking at least one course for credit or audit; and • Who want to participate in student activities

Profile: Julie Schedule: Example Thursdays 8:00-9:30-Instuctructional Media Carrie, In-class Peer Mentor 9:45-Internship with Pre-K 4 class at Edgewood Campus Grade School 11:00-Internship with K5 class 1:30-Meet Ashley, Social Peer Mentor Lunch & Bus Training 5:30-7:00-Safety in the Community

  10. Inclusion in Postsecondary Education The practice of educating students with significant disabilities alongside their chronological age peers without disabilities. Inclusion on a college campus takes into account academic inclusion, integrated student housing, supported employment and access to normalized recreation, and social activities.

  11. Peer Mentors • Matches Edgewood College students as Peer Mentors with Cutting-Edge students; • One-on-one relationships provide guidance; • Facilitates academic and social inclusion for individuals with disabilities who would not otherwise be able to attend college; • Peer Mentors serve as role models; • Peer Mentors are at the core of facilitating inclusion in academic courses and student life activities; • Promote acceptance in the classroom; and • Promote inclusion in student life activities.

  12. Fund Development We need your help! The Cutting-Edge Pilot Project is in need of private donors who would like to see the project continue into the future. In time, the project will be driven by tuition. Immediate funding for start-up development is needed now.
