  1. NYC Fleet Sustainability: Biodiesel

  2. Goals • 30 x 17 • Cleaner air • Fuel and cost reduction • Setting the standard

  3. Strategy • Improved metrics • Fuel tracking • Biodiesel • EV, hybrid, and solar • CNG investments • Fleet reduction and right sizing, clean-fleet plan • Fleet deployment • New technologies, diesel emissions reduction • Mandate compliance, coordination with DEP • Education, training, and promotion

  4. Biodiesel • Sanitation and Parks are already national leaders in biodiesel use. • At Parks, the program began with a summer donation of B100

  5. Current city biodiesel use DSNY and Parks use biodiesel now in almost 5,000 units: of every make, size, age, and type. Parks uses B20 exclusively during the warm months. DSNY uses a mix of B5 and B20. DOT also uses B5 in some applications.

  6. Biodiesel expansion The Fleet will now expand biodiesel use in two phases: going to B5 year round and citywide first, and then transitioning to greater B20 use during the warm weather months for public works agencies

  7. Hybrids and biodiesel NYC is combining investment in hybrid-electric technology with biodiesel use to combine environmental benefits. The City is also transitioning to new Ford Diesel pickups, specifically designed for B20 use.

  8. City Investment The City has already spent well more than $100 million in biodiesel blended fuel.

  9. Recognition • Over 40% of all City vehicles currently operate on some type of alternative fuel. • NYC Fleet’s efforts in sustainability have been recognized in many areas: • National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA), 2008, First Greenest Fleet In Nation Award, Parks, DCAS • Eye on Biodiesel Award, 2011, Parks, DSNY, National Biodiesel Board (NBB) • Government Fleet News, NYPD, DPR and the DCAS Managed Fleet were selected as one of the Top 100 Fleets in the U.S., 2009, 2010, 2011 • Government Fleet News, Green Fleet Award, 9thPlace in the US in 2010, 11th place in 2011 • Automotive Fleet News, Environmental Leadership Award Winner, 2009, 2010 • NYC Selected as the Nation’s Largest Hybrid Fleet By Government Fleet News, 2008 • DSNY and Parks have been Fleet Owner Magazine Fleet of the Years
