  1. Land use data set Classification of all model cells to reflect water-use characteristics

  2. Background Need amount and location of irrigated acres over time, including indication of crop mix; dryland and rangeland also Many prior efforts used methods which caused an unrealistic break before and after 1997 DNR team has now produced new and useful results for Central Platte, Tri Basin (except Gosper County) and Twin Platte NRDs

  3. Datasets used to create land use inputs

  4. DNR approach • Upper limit of irrigation over time based on: certified groundwater irrigated acres, surface water irrigated acres, registered irrigation well database • Actual irrigation: periodic Census of Agriculture harvested acres, interpolated to annual values • Benchmarks: periodic remote sensing data to adjust trends and constrain results • Spatial results: county-level data (including crop mix) extrapolated to locations of potential irrigated acres in amount proportional to actual irrigation

  5. DNR approach (2) • Potential dryland = 2005 CALMIT plus any land now irrigated, in years prior to well • Actual dryland = interpolated from census and remote sensing information • Older unadjusted Rich Kern data used outside the NRDs and in Gosper County • DNR worked with The Flatwater Group to estimate M&I uses and return flows

  6. Area of adjusted data
