Land Use Are y’all city folk or country folk?
There are two types of land that we live in URBAN: mainly covered with buildings and roads RURAL: relatively few people and large areas of space
So what is Livingston Township? • We are a suburb of cities - the major one being NYC. That means that people live outside of the city where there is more space availability and a “rural” setting to raise families.
In the United States, each person depends upon 12 hectares of rural area for survival. The resources rural areas provide are called ecosystem services Identify some examples of ECOSYSTEM SERVICES a rural area provides to us: • animals to eat • milk • vegetables to eat • clothing from wool • oxygen from trees/plants • Ethanol • jobs
Urban areas must have an infrastructure. Infrastructure: • All things a society builds for public use. • Some examples include….
With limited space, urban sprawl happens. • People spread out into areas surrounding cities and create suburbs (Livingston and NY)
Problems with Urban sprawl… • 1. People living in substandard housing • 2. People living in marginal (unsuitable for life) land Sao Paulo, Brazil
Problems with Urban sprawl… • 3. Heat islands- cities generate and trap more heat. Roads and buildings absorb and retain heat longer than vegetation. This makes cities have higher temps
Problems with Urban sprawl… • 4. Air pollution/health hazards
In order to solve these problems, good land use planning must be implemented. • Land use planning: _deciding how any available land will be used based upon the demands of the surrounding population
We need land for……… • Homes and infrastructure in cities and suburbs • Open space • Farmlands/rangelands/forests • Waste disposal • Recreational enjoyment/parks/reserves
