Introduction Polymers • Combination of monomers in a regular pattern. • Two types of conducting ions: 1)Complexes of inorganic salts & a polymer. 2)Polymer electrolytes comprising polymer cation & anion with its counter ions. • Used to fabricate humidity sensors. • Also used to fabricate gas sensors. • Thin polymer layers are used in many industrial applications. Conducting polymer sensors for home • Conducting polymers exhibit a wide range of tunable properties that make them ideal for use as sensors. • Examples: chemical, mechanical, optical, thermal, acoustic, and electrical sensors. • Most of these sensor modalities involve changes in the electronic structure of the polymer. • The changes result from chemical, mechanical, optical, thermal and acoustic stimuli.   7. Operation • Two important thermal characterization techniques coupled with molecular identification. These techniques allow 1) the determination of the ratios of polymer, solvent and ionic contents; 2) The determination of the glass transition temperatures which are critical for an understanding of mechanical behavior; 3) the investigation of temperatures at which thermal degradation occurs and of the mechanisms associated with this degradation.   11. Advantages over other sensors Polymer sensors can be effectively used to detect the humidity of the environment. Conducting polymer sensors are used in various daily activities, where the structure of polymer is considered.   13. Disadvantages The main disadvantage of the polymer sensors in humidity detection is that, these cannot be used in places of high humidity because of limited capacity.   15. Applications • Humidity detection : With respect to rapid response and reliability, water-vapor absorbent organics are much better than inorganic materials. The capacity–type thin–film polymer humidity sensors with a rapid response are made by using spin–coated thin film as an absorbent of water vapor, with obliquely deposited metal electrodes. Reliability and stability are improved by exposing the sensors to a moist and highly heated atmosphere. The primary characteristic of the sensors is a rapid response. ECE5320 Mechatronics.
