  9. Types of 9-Lead Motors 12-lead variation motor diagram ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Types of 9-Lead Motors • Variations of 9-lead motors • Motors can have multiple wyes or deltas wired in parallel • Very large motors will have several wyes or deltas wired in parallel, similar to having multiple motors in one ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Major applications • Low maintenance high power applications • Industrial Equipment • Oil wells • Air compressors ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Image of 9-Lead motor Image from globalindustrial.com ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Image of motor components ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Basic Working Principle • Speed governed by number of poles in the stator and the frequency of the power source • Speed can be changed by changing the input power frequency (VFD) • High voltage rating is twice the low voltage rating ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Pros & Cons • Pros • No commutator • High Voltage, Low Amperage • Low maintenance • High power to size ratio • Wide range of sizes available • Cons • Requires three phase power • Difficult to adjust speed without VFD controller ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. A typical sample configuration in application ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Common Causes of Failures • Single-phase burnout • Overload • Unbalanced voltage • Voltage spikes ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. Control of Motor • Speed can be controlled using a variable frequency drive(VFD) • Motors can be wired to have one setup for start-up and a secondary setup for running • Called a soft start, allows for higher torque with lower amps for start-up • Switches to run circuit when in-rush current disappears allowing full power at speed ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Cost Wide range of motors available Small fractional horsepower motors from under $100 to several hundred Large horsepower motors costing several thousands ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  20. Cost • Sample Prices • ¼ HP $138.95 • ½ HP $205.95 • 1 HP $634 • 15 HP $1,060 • 300 HP $32,704 Prices from globalindustrial.com ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  21. How to Choose • Voltage supply available • Horsepower required • Rotational Speed • Mounting • Output Shaft size • Enclosure Style ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  22. Major Specifications • Horsepower – ¼ • Enclosure – TEFC • Frame – 48 • RPM - 1725 • Phase – 3 • Voltage 208-230/460 • Amps – 1.2-1.4/.7 • Hertz – 60 • Shaft Diameter 1/2 Example of specifications from http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/motors/ac-motors-2-phase/3-phase-general-purpose-motors/motor-48-tefc-3ph-1725rpm-c4t17fb9cc ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  23. Limitations • Only operates on two voltages unless motor is rewound • Higher versatility comes with greater connection complexity • Variable speed control requires VFD controller ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  24. Where to Purchase • Globalindustrial.com • A.O. Smith Motors • Grainger.com • Industrial Supply • Dayton Motors • Other ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
