  2. Definition • An annotation is a comment or explanation. • An annotated source, therefore, is a reference to a book or an article plus a comment about that source that you put into your own words.

  3. Steps to Annotate • Where did your source come from? • What does it say? Message you are trying to get across? • Credibility of the author? • How does it go along with what you are writing? Tie it back to you thesis and purpose of your paper.

  4. Different Ways to Annotate • Make connections of what you read: draw arrows and lines to connect ideas or show possible areas of synthesis. • Mark major points or definitions. • Make notes and write summaries, or reading notes like before readings. • Respond to what you read. • Read aloud or have a conversation with the author.
