First Continental Congress • September 1774 – colonial leaders called a meeting in Philadelphia • Delegates from 12 colonies gathered in what became the First Continental Congress (only Georgia did not come) • Agreed to boycott all British Goods and stop exporting all British goods UNTIL the Intolerable Acts were repealed • Also encouraged each colony to train and set up a militia – an army of citizens who serve as soldiers during a war
Lexington and Concord (Two places) • In Massachusetts, colonists were preparing to resist. • Set up minutemen – prepared to fight at a moment’s notice • The British sent troops over to seize the weapons the colonists had in Concord. • On April 18 1775, 700 British left Boston for Concord. The Sons of Liberty were watching and warned the colonists. • Best known was Paul Revere • Colonists forced to retreat to Lexington
“Shot Heard Around the World” • At daybreak, the redcoats (British) reached Lexington where they were met by the colonists • The colonists were about to leave when a shot rang out • No one is sure which side it came from • British moved to Concord where they were met by 300 minutemen • Fighting broke out and the British had to retreat • Battle of Lexington and Concord marked all end for a hope of a peaceful settlement with the British
