  1. Planning and Monitoring in Pursuit of Goals Preparation of the Body KC5

  2. Remember your knowledge about goal setting Well written goals should be based on the SMART concept Specific Measurable Agreed Realistic Time Bound

  3. Well written short term goal I will complete 7 out of 8 repetitions hitting my target time of 43 secs during my CRE set with my HR in the 70-85% MHR training zone. Specific Measurable Agreed and Realistic Time bound

  4. Monitoring progress towards goals • Remember this is a continuous (on going) process • Methods • Pacing time checks • Pulse Counting • Subjective Feeling

  5. Monitoring short term goals provides the following benefits: Inspires / motivates to do better Identifies if training is effective eg working at correct intensity Outlines when training needs to be progressed Develops confidence when short term goals are achieved Provides stepping stones in pathway towards long term goal Reduces anxiety in working towards a long term goal Provides a focus for achievement

  6. Example of well written long term goal I want to swim 100m f/c in 1min 25sec by December 15th Measurable Time bound Agreed and Realistic Specific

  7. Reviewing progress towards goals Remember this is a summative process Method 100m f/c whole performance observation schedule

  8. Reviewing long term goals provides the following benefits Provides comparison with initial performance Identifies if training has been effective Identifies ongoing development needs Provides information to set future targets

  9. Goal Setting Homework • On the PE Wiki: • Calculate all of your target pace times for 25m, 50m and 75m for both CRE and SE. Post these times on the PE wiki space under the discussion “Target times” • Set a long term target specific to you in relation to the 100m FC (slide 6) • Set a short term target specific to you in relation to the 100m FC (slide 3)

  10. PowerPoint Jigsaw • Sharing the workload and learning from each other. • You will be split in to groups of four. • Each person will have to produce a PowerPoint which answers a question. • Group members will share the PPT’s on the Wiki • By watching group members PPT’s you get an understanding of how to answer 4 questions – but you will only have prepared one answer. • You will have to comment on each group members PPT.

  11. Question 1 • Explain in DETAIL how you used (applied) knowledge of Principles of Training to design a relevant development programme (Swimming programme) to address your performance development needs.

  12. Question 2 • Describe, in DETAIL, the programme of work (swim training programme) you used to develop your performance.

  13. Question 3 • Explain why any adaptations/changes were made to your programme. Give specific examples of these adaptations/ changes.

  14. Question 4 • Describe, in detail, how you monitored the effectiveness of your programme of work.
