  1. Research Schedule

  2. Research Coordination • Electrolyte • LBNL, single source of SDC: Rhodia Company • Cathode development • Caltech, initially fix anode as Ni-SDC • Monthly update to NWU & LBNL as to best cathode • Anode • NWU, initially fix cathode as SSC • Monthly update to CIT & LBNL as to best anode • Initial FC & catalyst integration into Swiss Roll • Caltech personnel to assist USC • Integration & validation of models • Caltech to perform ‘model’ experiments  parameters • Caltech and USC to pursue integration efforts

  3. Management & Reporting • S. Haile is reponsible for overall program • Technical research areas of each PI clearly defined • Annual internal meetings minimum • Videoconferencing facilities for more frequent communications • Attendance at DARPA annual PI meetings • Goodwin & Haile other joint programs • Biennial and quarterly DARPA reports as required

  4. Milestones Schedule August 2002 • Demonstrate a SCFC outside of a Swiss roll structure: 75 mW/cm2, 600C, CH4 • Demonstrated 68 mW/cm2, 600C, C3H8 (propane) • Develop an integrated, first-generation model:SCFC + combustor + macroscale Swiss roll structure;establish design & operation parameters 1st gen. device • Developed separate, preliminary models for each component • Establish 1st generation MEA (membrane-electrode-assembly) fabrication protocols • Complete, for anode supported [ Ni-SDC | SDC | SSC ]

  5. Milestones Schedule February 2003 • Demonstrate a SCFC inside of a Swiss roll structure: thermally self-sustaining, 50 mW/cm2, 600C, C3H8 • Demonstrated few mW/cm2, 500C, C3H8 • Develop an integrated, first-generation model:SCFC + combustor + macroscale Swiss roll structure;establish design & operation parameters • Integrate Caltech catalysts into Swiss roll structure:self-initiation of heating, or minor external heat source

  6. Expenditures * Haile, Goodwin
