Trained, supervised volunteers assist school personnel by: • Helping Students through activities which – • Motivate them to learn • Provide them with successful learning experiences • Enhance their self-esteem • Helping teachers by enabling them to – • Perform their tasks • Provide effective reinforcement activities • Enrich the curriculum • Strengthening school-community relations by – • Providing opportunities for community members to learn more about school programs • Increasing opportunities for communication between the groups • Encouraging community members to share their time and talents with schools
Duty of a volunteer • Make decisions as you feel a responsible parent would want • Do not exceed the scope of responsibility that has been delegated to you • Always act in a manner where student health and safety is paramount
Confidentiality • What you see and hear at school stays here. • Contact the teacher or administrator with any concern that you may have. • Please complete the Confidentiality Agreement and turn into the office
Confidentiality • Witnessing a student in “an office or health room • Sharing that a student receives “extra help” • Impromptu discussions in hallway or public location • Sharing of student allergies or medications • Assisting with grading classwork or compiling Thursday Folders • ***Open discussions about students or school personnel should only be with those who have A LEGITIMATE NEED TO KNOW***
Respecting Instructional Time • When you come in to volunteer, this is not the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. • If you need to meet with the teacher, please set up a different time that is convenient for both of you. • Please respect the teacher’s planning time
Discipline Discipline of all students is to be done by the classroom teacher. If you are working with a child or a small group and difficulty arises, let the teacher know immediately. Remember it is the behavior of the student we disapprove of, not the student.
