  2. Phonetics • Phonetics: It is the study of the production and reception of speech sounds. It is concerned with the sounds of language, how these sounds are articulated and how hearer perceives them. • Articulatory phonetics (production) علم الأصوات النطقي • Auditory phonetics (perception) علم الأصوات السمعي • Acoustic phonetics (physical properties and transmission of sounds): intensity, duration and frequency.علم الأصوات الفیزیائي

  4. Consonants & Vowels • A vowel sound is produced with an open passage of air in the mouth. Vowel sounds produced are articulated with a free airflow. • A consonant sound is formed when the airstream is restricted or stopped at some point in the vocal tract. Consonants are produced with some narrowing (obstruction) of the articulatory passageway.

Consonants • The state of the glottis (voiced or voiceless vocal cords): When the vocal cords are open, the consonant sound is voiceless; When they are vibrating, the consonant is voiced. • The Place of articulation: It is the point where the contact between the articulators takes place. • The manner of articulation: how the airstream is modified by the vocal tract to produce sounds. It depends on the degree of closure or constriction of the articulators – how close together or far apart they are.

  10. Consonant Classifications • Natural Classes are groups of sounds in a language that share some articulatory or auditory features. In order for a group of sounds to be a natural class it must include all of the sounds that share a particular feature or a group of features. • [b, d, g ] voiced oral stops • [p, t, k ] voiceless oral stops • [ p, l, w ]

  11. Consonant Classifications …Cont’d • Obstruents are consonants produced with an obstruction of the airflow. The sounds in this category arestops, fricatives, affricates. • Sonorants are consonants produced with a relatively open passage for the airflow. They include nasals, liquids and glides. • Sibilant Sounds: are characteristically intense consonants which are produced with a hissing sound by directing the air through a narrow channel in the vocal tract towards the sharp edge of the teeth. They include all fricative and affricate sound consonants including [s, z, ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ ].

Arabic Phonetics • جھود العلماء العرب القدامى في علم الأصوات: 1- أبو الأسود الدؤلي: وضع الحركات على الحروف العربیة وذلك لتفادي الخطأ الذي وقع بھا العرب مع اختلاط الشعوب والقبائل. 2- الخلیل بن أحمد: ١- كان له شرف وضع الرمز الخاص بالھمزة. ٢- وضع رمز الشدة. ٣- اخترع علامات الضبط التي نستعملھا إلى یومنا ھذا المتمثلة بالفتحة والضمة والكسرة. ٤- كان من الأوائل الذین قدموا دراسة دقیقة لجھاز النطق. ٥- قام بترتیب حروف النطق ترتیبا صوتیا.

  14. Arabic Phonetics • جھود العلماء العرب القدامى في علم الأصوات: 3- سیبویه: ١- رتب الحروف ترتیبا صوتیا مخالفا في ذلك ترتیب شیخه الخلیلبن أحمد. ٢- قسم الأصوات إلى ستة عشر مخرجا. ٣- قسم الأصوات من حیث صفاتھا فمنھا صفیریة ،ذات الغنة،اللینة،ذات الاستطالة،المنحرفة،المكررة والھاویة.

Arabic Phonetics 4- ابن سینا ورسالته أسباب حدوث الحروف: اعتمد ابن سینا الدراسة التشریحیة والطبیة والفیزیائیة لجھاز النطق وقد قام بتقسیم رسالته إلى ستة فصول: 1- في سبب حدوث الصوت، وھو عنده تموج الھواء دفعة بسرعة. 2- في سبب حدوث الحروف:ویقسم حال الھواء المتموج الحادث للصوت إلى جانبینذاتي والأخر یتوقف على المخارج والمحابس. 3- في تشریح الحنجرة.

Arabic Phonetics 5- عبد القاھر الجرجاني وكتابه المقتصد في شرح الإیضاح والتكملة: تحدث عن صفات الأصوات وقسمها إلى: 1- الأصوات العامة وتشمل الجھر والھمس والشدة والرخاوة والاعتدال. 2- الصفات الخاصة وتشمل المطبقة والمنفتحة والمستعلیة والمنخفضة والصفیریة وذات الغنة والاستطالة وذاتالمد واللین. 3- الصفات المفردة للأصوات وتشمل الانحراف والتكریر والأصوات الھاویة والمھتویة. 4- ثم ناقش قضایا التشكیل الصوتي كالإدغام والإبدال وغیرھا.

Arabic Consonant Sounds الصوامت • الجهاز النطقي: الشفتان، الأسنان، سقف الحنك، اللسان، الحلق، الحنجرة ، الأحبال الصوتية) أقسام سقف الحنك: 1- اللثة وهي التي تلي اللسان alveolar Ridge 2- الغار وهو الجزء الصلب المخرز الذي يلي اللثة (الجزء الصلب من السقف الأعلى) Hard Palate 3- الطبق وهو الجزء الطري/الرخو من سقف الحنك الذي يلي الغار Soft Palate 4- اللهاة Uvula

  19. مخارج الحروف • مخارج الحروف الرئيسية هي ”الجوف، والحلق، واللسان، والشفتان، والانف“

  20. صفات الصوامت • الأصوات الإنفجارية:Stop sounds • الاصوات الاحتكاكية: Fricative Sounds • الاصوات المركبة المزدوجة Affricate: وتجمع بين الشدة والرخاوة ويسميه البعض الصوت المزجي أو المركب وهو( ج ) وفي الإنجليزية dʒ • الأصوات المتوسطة أو الجانبيةLateral, liquid, semi-vowel sound: هي الاصوات التي ليست بالشديدة ولا بالرخوة كأن يمر الهواء بمجراه دون احتكاك او انحباس من اي نوع اما لان مجراه في الفم يتجنب المرور بنقطة السد او التضييق كما في صوت ( ل ) و (و) أو لأن التضييق غير ذي استقرار كما في صوت (ر) أو لأن الهواء يمر عبر الأنف كما في (م ، ن).

  21. الجهر والهمس3- الصوامت المجهورة: وهي التي يتذبذب الوتران الصوتيان عند النطق بهاب، ج، خ، د، ذ، ر، ز، ض،ط، ظ، ع، غ، ل، م، ن، و، ي الصوامت المهموسة: وهي التي لا يتهز الوتران الصوتيان عند النطق بها ت، ث، ح، خ، س، ش، ص، ف، ك، ھ

  22. 4- التفخيم والترقيق الصوامت المفخمة وهي تلك الاصوات التي یصاحب إنتاجھا أثر سمعي ناتج عن ارتفاع مؤخرة اللسان الى أعلى باتجاه الطبق. وهي مجموعة بلفظ (خص ضغط قظ ) • ینقسم التفخیم إلي قسمین ھما: ١- تفخیم كلى ویشمل ( ص،ض،ط،ظ) ٢- تفخیم جزئي ویشتمل (خ،غ،ق). یوجد للصوامت المفخمة تفخیما كلیا مقابلات مرققة ھي: • ص – س • ض – د • ط – ت • ظ – ذ الصوامت المرققة: یحدث الترقیق عندما یصاحب إنتاج الصامت ارتفاع مقدم اللسان في اتجاه الغار. الاحرف المرققة هي باقي الحروف باستثناء ( ا ، ل ، ر )

Mistakes with Sounds not Existing in Arabic • [p] as in /pat/ tends to be substituted with [b]: I baid fif bence  a bicture of her. • [v] tends to be substituted with [f] the van hit the tree  the fan hit the tree 3. [ŋ] as in /king/ and /thing/ would be pronounced like /sIŋə/  /sInŋə/ 4. [tʃ ] as affricate is pronounced [ʃ ] /tʃeə/ chair, becomes /ʃeə/ share. 5. /ʒ / does not exist in Arabic, it is replaced with [dʒ] əkeiʒən  əkeidʒən 6. /t/ and /d/ are dental in Arabic rather than alveolar. 7. [r] in Arabic is an alveolar trill rather than alveolar retorfelx; English [r] is replaced by a schwa /ə/ in final positions; Arabic users tend to use [r] in all situations.

Consonant Cluster in English and Arabic A Consonant cluster is a group of consonants which comes together without a vowel sound between them such as spin, skin, and strand • Two consonants: sphere, sleep, cuts, dogs. • Three consonants: street, risked, plunged, fix this. • Five consonants: mixed sweets. • Six consonants: first stream. • Seven consonants: tempts strangers.

Clusters may come at initial or final positions in English words 1- Two consonants at the beginning of words: • 1. /s/ followed by /p, t, k, f, m, n, l, w/ as in spare, steam, sky, sphere, smile, sneer, slow, and swear • /t/ followed by /r, w, j/ as in trim, twin,tune • /k/ followed by /l, r, w, j/ as in clip, crime, queen, queue • /b/ followed by /l, r, j/ as in blame, bright, beautiful • /d/ followed by /r, w, j/ as in dry, dwell, duty • /g/ followed by /l, r/ as in glare, gross. • /f/ followed by /l, r, j/ as in flare, frame, few • /Ɵ/ followed by /r, w/ as in three, thwart • /ʃ/ followed by /r/ as in shrink. • /v, m, n, h/ followed by /j/ as in view, mute, news,huge

Clusters may come at initial or final positions in English words 2- Three consonants at the beginning of words: • /spr/ as in spray, spread, spring. • /str/ as in struggle, straw, stress, strict. • /skr/ as in scream, screen, screw, script. • /stj/ as in student, stupid. • /skj/ as in skew, (this sequence is rare in English). • /spl/ as in splash, splendid, split. /skw/ as in squad, square, squash, squeezes.

Two or more consonants at the end of the word: • /s/ and /z/ at the end of nouns to form the plural as in facts, fields, books, dogs. • /s/ and /z/ at the end of verbs in the third person in the present tense: eats, gives, risks, yields. • /t/ and /d/ at the end of verbs in the past tense: as in wished, raised, risked, plunged. • /Ɵ/ at the end of nouns and numbers: as in width, strength, seventh. • /Ɵ/ followed by /s/ at the end of plural nouns and numerals as in breadths, sevenths. 4. Three or more consonants at word boundaries as in best man, long skirt.

Gemination in Arabic and English In Arabic, gemination or consonant doubling involved some muscular intensity when pronouncing a sound, e.g. akala أكَل # akkalaأكَّل darasaدَرَس # darrasa درَّس In English, there is doubling of consonants in written English but not in pronunciation. Thus, words like /attack/ , /allow/ are doubled in writing only. Arabic speakers tend to double or lengthen the doubled letters, e.g. /allow/  /al-low/ /attack/   /at-tack/

  33. Pedagogical implications • Differences in consonant systems of Arabic and English may lead to problems in pronunciation, comprehension and communication for users of the two languages. • Language teachers need to sensitize their learners’ awareness of problematic areas and design activities which address potential errors that are likely to arise due to these differences!
