  6. A. Unit • A specific quantity that can be measured and is always the same • Examples: • 1 mile • 1 second • Dozen

  7. B. Conversion Factor • Fraction that lets you convert between units • It always equals one! • Ex. 1 dozen eggs or 12 eggs 12 eggs 1 dozen eggs • Ex. 1 day or 24 hours 24 hours 1 day

  8. C. Mole • A mole is a unit of matter • 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 (Avogadro’s number) • 1 MOLE of anything has…602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 items!!! • A mole is like a dozen • 1 dozen eggs = 12 eggs • 1 mole of eggs = 6.02 x 1023 eggs

Why do scientists use the mole? • Particles (atoms and molecules) are very very very small…it’s impossible to individually count atoms! • So scientists need to be able to count substances using larger terms • Example: A doctor needs to give a patient Penicillin. • Is it easier to give the patient .003 moles of the drug, or 18,006,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules of the drug?

Setting Up Conversion Problems • Write the given unit (The one you HAVE) • Check mole mtn to see how many steps • Write x ___________ (for each step) • Put the starting (given) unit on the bottom • This is where you are on Mole Mtn • Put the unit you want on the top • This is where you are going on Mole Mtn Ex: Convert from grams to moles: Moles Grams x Grams
