  2. Acronym soup • University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) • National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) • Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) • UCAR Point of Presence (UPoP) • Questions and discussions throughout please -- and as for acronym soup ingredients, please ask if I miss one or check the decoder page at tinyurl.com/nw-decoder

  3. Review and update topic list • Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) • UCAR Point of Presence (UPoP) • Utah and FRGP: Summit • Western Region Networking (WRN) • Colorado Telehealth Network (CTN) • Colorado K-12 networking: EAGLE-Net (EN) • Stimulus related items

  4. Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) • 10 years of operation • Utah leaving (more on that in Summit discussion) • USAFA joining? (discussions pending) • SuperDREAM project essentially completed: • increased redundancy • multiple location connection options • two commodity carriers (one at each location) • Increased peering traffic • ESnet connection to 10G • RMIX and Comcast ongoing • SECOM peering coming • NASA peering coming • Intra-member traffic and Akamai caching

  5. Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) • Increasing commodity traffic • Quilt – Level3 and Qwest (multiple 10Gbps via the Quilt CIS program so seeing $/Mb price decreases) • Increasing TransitRail (TR) traffic • TR and CPS discussion… • Any E-fort questions or follow up (10G State to E-Fort and 1G from FRGP to State)? • Any demand from users or researchers (or any app?) for IPv6? • SCONE and BiSON fiber project connectivity (GENI proposal--10G bison updates?) • NCAR Wyoming Supercomputer Center (NWSC)

  6. Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) • Other FRGP questions or related discussion items? • Anyone attend the Colorado Broadband Summit held on 01-Apr-2009? Any feedback on emphasis or direction for State of Colorado? • Quilt tracking nationally in this area (examples available) • Discussion (here if time or later?)…

  7. FRGP members (16) • •Colorado School of Mines • Colorado State University system • Fort Lewis College • Ithaka • National Center for Atmospheric Research • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration • State of Colorado • UNAVCO • University of Colorado at Boulder • University of Colorado at Colorado Springs • University of Colorado Denver • University of Denver • University of Northern Colorado • University of Utah • University of Wyoming • United States Antarctic Program

  8. UCAR Point of Presence (UPoP) • 2 years of operation • Just brought up 1G QMOE • Thanks to DU for their QMOE circuit sharing (past for CDHE and CARL (and present for ADR)) • Thanks to UCD (and others) for continued support • Increasing cost sharing as UPoP grows • Variety of options for education, government, and non-profit institutions (e.g., backup/failover connections; diverse circuits or direct fiber connections) • Intra-member access (e.g., direct ADR access) • National R&E peering traffic (TR/CPS)

  9. UPoP Members (15) • Auraria Higher Education Center • Boulder Valley School District • Colorado Association of Research Libraries • Centennial Board of Cooperative Educational Services (EN) • City of Boulder • City and County of Denver (DIA pending) • Colorado Department of Higher Education • Colorado Mountain College • Deproduction • Denver Health and Hospital Authority • EDUCAUSE • Metropolitan State College of Denver • St. Mary's Academy • Science and Technology in Atmospheric Research (STAR) Institute

  13. Summit • The Mountain West Advanced Networking Cooperative • Goal: establish a lightweight, nimble collaborative overlay above the Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) and the Utah Education Network (UEN) for managing regional connectivity (including peering) and potentially other related regional IT projects

  14. Summit • Initial members: FRGP and UEN • Open to other aggregating members over time • Governance: • Summit Policy Oversight Committee (SPOC) • Summit Technical Operations Committee (STOC)

  15. 10Gbps I2 WDM SLC I2 WDM Denver I2 WDM KC I2 Router KC I2 Router SLC • Future topology (late spring 2009) • 10Gbps primary IP connection to Internet2 Network (IP) in SLC • 10Gbps backup IP connection from Denver to Kansas City • 10Gbps dedicated wavelength between Denver and SLC for Summit use • Internet2 DCN connection (2.5Gbps) for Northrop Grumman in Denver (not shown) UEN Switch SLC FRGP Switch Denver UEN Router SLC FRGP Router Denver

  16. Western Region Networking (WRN) • A parallel discussion going on regarding possibility of a larger Western affinity group • An opportunity to improve network service for “the West”: • Arizona • California • Colorado • Idaho • New Mexico • Utah • Washington • Wyoming

  17. WRN • Intra-region peering • NLR and Internet2 services • Back each other up (provide diverse layer 2 and 3 if on-net failures) • Efficient and cost-effective commodity and Transit Rail (TR) and Commercial Peering Service (CPS) connections
