  1. Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration Hot Seat

  2. Hot Seat Instructions • You are competing against classmates in your row (across the classroom). The hot seat is the seat in each row closest to the outside windows. • Your answer must be written and you must stop writing when the teacher says, “pencils down” • After hearing the correct answer you will check your answer with the person to your left and the person to your right. • If your answer is correct and the person to your right answered incorrectly you move into their seat (towards the hot seat) and they will move into yours. • If your answer is incorrect and the person to your left answered correctly, you move into their seat (away from the hot seat) and they will move into yours. • Remember you may only move one seat at a time! If you get it right and two people in front of your get it wrong you still can only move one seat!

  13. Which of the following i the source of the carbon in sugar produced during photosynthesis? • Carbon dioxide • Water • Oxygen • ATP

  14. Most animals make energy available for cell activity by transferring the energy of glucose to ATP. This process occurs during • Anaerobic respiration only • Aerobic respiration only • Both aerobic and anaerobic respiration • Neither aerobic and anaerobic respiration

  15. In animal cells, the energy to convert ADP to ATP comes directly from • hormones • Sunlight • food • heat

  17. Which product is of the greatest benefit to the organisms in which cellular respiration occurs? • glucose • carbon dioxides • ATP molecules • water molecules

  18. A plant is placed in a closed chamber in the light. Why is the [CO2] decreasing? • The cells of the plant are removing CO2 from the environment as they perform photosynthesis.

  19. An animal is placed in a closed chamber in the light. Why is the [CO2] increasing? • The cells of the animal are adding CO2 to the environment as they perform cellular respiration.

  20. A plant and animal are placed in a closed chamber in the light. Why is the [CO2] staying the same? • The CO2 produced by the animal during cellular respiration is used by the plant to perform photosynthesis.

  21. When during a 24 hour period does a plant perform cellular respiration ? • All the time

  22. A plant is placed in a closed chamber in the dark. Why is the [CO2] increasing? • The plant is performing cellular respiration and adding CO2 to the environment.

  23. An animal is placed in a closed chamber in the dark. Does light intensity affect the rate of cellular respiration? • No, light is not necessary for cellular respiration.

  24. A plant and animal are placed in a closed chamber in the dark. Why is the CO2 concentration increasing? • Both the plant and animal are performing cellular respiration and adding CO2 to the environment.

  25. By which process are carbon dioxide and water converted to carbohydrates? • transpiration • respiration • fermentation • photosynthesis

  31. The production of energy-rich ATP molecules is the direct result of • Recycling light energy to be used in the process of photosynthesis • Releasing the stored energy of carbohydrates by the process of cellular respiration • Breaking down starch by the process of digestion • Copying coded information during the process of protein synthesis
