  1. GovEnergy 2008 ORNL ESPC Overview

  2. ESPC Project Summary $89M project funded by $8.2M in guaranteed annual savings Energy Conservation Measures: Select Steam Decentralization of Remote Buildings Super Boiler technology Building Management System Advanced Electric Metering Comprehensive HVAC Upgrades Energy Efficient Lighting Water Conservation Measures Compressed Air Cooling Reduces fossil fuel consumption by over 80%! Emissions reduction equal to: removing 2.1 million cars from the road annually or planting 32 million trees!

  3. ESPC Project Summary (continued) Addresses 6 of the Secretary’s TEAM goals Reduces energy intensity in lab / office buildings by 30% Meets long-term energy reduction goal of 30% Reduces water usage by over 115M gallons/year Meets long-term water reduction goal of 16% Aligns with ORNL Ten Year Site Plan

  4. Meeting the Primary TEAM Initiative Goals

  5. Renewal Energy Showcase: Biomass Gasification System • Scope • Upgrades existing natural gas steam plant to a wood gasification biomass plant • Biomass plant integrated with existing plant for one integrated facility • Upgrades outdated infrastructure in existing plant • Upgrades existing steam distribution system • Woody biomass will be sourced within a 50 mile radius • Benefits • Reduces fossil fuel consumption by over 80%! • Major renewable energy utilization • Integrated with ORNL Biomass and Syngas research initiatives

  6. Energy Conservation Showcase: EERE’s Super Boiler Technology • Scope • Elimination of over 1.5 miles of steam piping to Melton Valley • Johnson Controls and ORNL worked together to incorporate EERE’s Super Boiler Technology in the new Melton Valley Steam Plant • Benefits • Super Boiler operates at up to 94% efficiency • NOx and CO emissions < 5ppm, extremely “clean” • Integrated M&V approach provides on-going research information

  7. Other Energy Conservation Measures • ECM 3.1 Building Management System Upgrades • ECM 3.2 Advanced Metering and Energy Awareness • “Smart Meters” will integrate with ORNL’s energy management system • Incorporates lab-wide program for energy awareness and sustainability education • ECM 4.1 Building Mechanical Upgrades • ECM 5.1 Lighting • Utilizes DOE scotopic and photopic research where applicable • ECM 13.1 Water Conservation • Reduces domestic water consumption by over 50% • ECM 13.2 Compressed Air Cooling System • Eliminates over 100 million gallons annually of once-through cooling water • Reduces site water consumption by 14% It takes the entire “bundle” to meet the TEAM Initiative!

  8. Summary of Project Benefits Significant renewable energy showcase Energy conservation Renews outdated mission-critical support infrastructure Attractive financial package given the level of infrastructure intensity Integrated with the research mission of ORNL Solid TEAM Initiative scorecard Leveraged TEAM Initiative program to modernize the Laboratory
