  1. God the Father – His Attributes

  2. TEXT: Gen 1:1, John 1:1 Because of the nature of God, it is impossible for mere humans to fully understand Him. The Bible describes God in human-like (anthropomorphic) terms, with the statements that in spite of those descriptions, we will never fully comprehend Him. God is described as being:

  3. Omniscient • God knows everything, past, present and future (Psalm 139:1-12). • What God knows of the future includes that which is merely possible and never becomes actual • Thus, God does not “predetermine” by His foreknowledge (Rom 8:28-29)

  4. II. HolY • The holiness of God is active, that is, it drives every thing that He is and does (Ex 3:5; Lev 19:2; 1 Sam 2:2) • This includes not only what he is and does, which is always righteous, but it also is the force behind that which He hates and judges (Rev 6:10) • Therefore , when He hates it is not an emotion, but part of His very nature

  5. III. Just • As the all-knowing and all-powerful One, He has absolute right and authority over His creatures • Thus, man’s highest destiny is to glorify God • In addition, no favoritism is shown in God’s justice, all are offered the same opportunity by His grace (Rom 3:26)

  6. IV. Love, Truth, and Mercy • These are not emotions (attained by right feeling), nor are they virtues (attained by right effort) • They are attributes, that is, God is precisely what these term denote, He is love (1 John 4:8), He is truth (Heb 10:23; John 14:6), He is mercy (Heb 4:16)
