  1. Civil Affairs “Looking good and keeping it classy”

  2. Purpose • The Corps Civil Affairs chain is responsible for establishing positive relations between the Corps of Cadets and other groups within and outside the university in addition to keeping the Corps of Cadets Association and Trigon updated with the activities on the outfit, major unit, and Corps level.

  3. Intent • It is the Corps Commanders intent to improve the Corps image and standing by continuing the traditional yearly projects and putting on some new annual projects for the Corps including an outdoor event on the Quad and a leadership conference drawing on other military schools in the nation.

  4. Major Yearly Projects • March to the Brazos: MTTB is the most important project for the Civil Affairs chain. We communicate with Commanders and outfits to obtain addresses for March of Dimes to send mail outs to in order to raise money. We also prepare outfits to conduct fundraisers for MTTB. (March to the Brazos has raised over 25 million dollars since it began to benefit research for assist with premature babies)

  5. Major Yearly Projects (cont) • Fall Semester Fundraiser: This year we will be doing a fundraiser to benefit Major Voelkel’s (past Corps Commander) daughter who has been fighting a life threatening condition and has spend the majority of her live in an ICU. This will be done in a very similar way to the Coins for Cooper project which was done at the Texas A&M vs. Texas game in 2009. (collection stations posted outside each entrance)

  6. Major Yearly Projects (cont) • Helping the University and other organizations: Last year the Corps of Cadets served over 31,000 hours of community service to the University and other organizations. • Sunday Night Visitors: It is the Civil Affairs chain’s responsibility to escort the visitors who wish to talk to the Corps. (about 50-100% of them are from sororities) I will need volunteers (it can be anyone except fish) or I will set up a duty roster rotating through major units.

  8. Emails • I will email the Civil Affairs chain weekly emails (Sunday night before outfit meeting) regarding what is happening in the chain, future events that we need volunteers for, and if there will be a need to have a meeting in the future. • The standard reward will be a bag in and if served multiple times marching tour/restricted weekend forgiveness depending on the time served. • I will also let you know what major unit will be responsible for gathering volunteers if we don’t fill the slots. (it will rotate after each group gets volunteered)

  9. Events • I will email the Civil Affairs Chain and request volunteers for events the Corps needs staffed. • Under the circumstance enough spots are not filled I will make it mandatory for a major unit (or multiple major units depending on the needs of the event) to provide the remainder of the volunteers for the event. • I will have extras for each event signed up under the circumstances someone needs to back out of volunteering. • If someone needs to back out of a volunteer spot they have until 48 hours before the event to do so and must contact the Corps Civil Affairs Sergeant. • If they are under 48 hours they must find a replacement or they will receive disciplinary action.

  10. Punishments • If someone does not show up to a meeting or backs out of an event later than 48 hours and does not provide a replacement they will receive 3 rams. • If someone backs out of an event later than 24 hours and does not provide a replacement they will receive 8 rams. • If someone does not show up to an event they will receive a class A or a class B restricted weekend. • If a major unit civil affairs officer does not provide enough people for an event when instructed to do so they will receive a class A restricted weekend.

  11. Weekly life of Civil Affairs chain • Receive email from Corps Staff Civil Affairs Officer (Sunday 6pm-7pm) • Advise Commanding Officer and 1st Sergeant of opportunities for outfits before outfit meeting. (all community service goes towards the gates award) • Send information regarding activities such as outfit nights out, parties with sororities, competitions, pictures of the outfit, fundraisers, and any other public relations worthy material to Andrew Howerton as available. (The CCA will post your material in “The Guidon”) • Coordinate with your units to provide Andrew Howerton with volunteers for events.

  12. How to coordinate volunteers • Receive email from either Andrew Howerton or Grace Mills with details regarding a new event coming up. • Email, talk to, and publicize with posters the need for volunteers. • Have them email you and CC Andrew and Grace (ahowerton4@hotmail.com and gracemills@neo.tamu.edu) • For larger events we will use Google docs to facilitate the process. • Either Andrew or Grace will email them and coordinate the remainder of the details.

  13. Notes • The Gates Award goes to the outfit that displays the most activity and highest hours of service to the community. Andrew Howerton will be keeping records of all volunteers if you have any question on your outfit’s progress he will answer any questions you may have. • Addendum to follow during the first week of school regarding the Corps of Cadets Leadership Conference and other plans.
