  1. Why is the population declining in some parts of the UK? Key Questions: Where do people live in the UK?  Why are some parts of the UK more densely populated than others?

  2. Learning Objectives • To understand why some parts of the UK have a declining population. • To know the push factors that make people leave an area

  3. STARTER Read the news story about a little girl at the smallest school in Britain on the Isle of Canna. This small island, in the Hebrides, is advertising for new families to boost its dwindling population of 15 people.

  4. PUSH Factors Read the story again, this time underline all the factors that would make someone want to leave Canna. Make a list in your book of the PUSH factors. Look at the following slides and add more to your list.

  5. Where would you live? Would you prefer to live in the Hebrides or Stockton on Tees? Give reasons. Task: Produce an advert to attract people to the place you would prefer to live.

  6. Plenary When Canna advertised for families to move to island in 2006, hundreds of people responded. • Why do so many people want to move to the Hebrides? • If it is so popular, why have so many people left? • Does it matter if some communities in the UK, like Canna, disappear?

  7. Homework Comparing Stockton with the rest of the UK, do you think the UK is a crowded country or not?
