  1. Unit Presentation – Speak Unit GionniSkupaka

  2. The Book • Speak is a book about a young girl, Melinda Sordino, who has become an outcast after she called the cops at a summer party. • Later we discover that she called the cops because she was raped. • The novel is told from Melinda’s point of view and it focuses on her struggles with depression.

  3. Unit Overview • Students will read the book Speak in whole group, collaborative groups, or independently. • Students will be working in literature circles to discuss, interpret, react, etc., to the novel. • Students will work on a collaborative project that involves sexual assault and self-defense. • Create a brochure • Create a poster using Glogster (online poster) • Presentation to the class

  4. Goals • I hope the students will learn more about symbolism, theme, figurative language, author’s craft, and characterization through the novel. • I expect the students to relate the themes in the story to their life and the world around them. • The students will learn the research process to find information regarding sexual assault and self-defense. • The students will create a project that includes a brochure, poster, and presentation that connects to the real world. It will be on sexual assault and self-defense.

  5. Curriculum Framing Questions How can a person overcome personal suffering? How can symbolism be used in literature to relate to encounters in the real world? How do we determine the theme of a text? How do I write a clear, cohesive piece of writing for a particular audience? How does the author use methods of figurative language to enhance voice? What types of conflicts are evident in the novel? How does the movie, Girl Interrupted, relate to Melinda Sordino? What changes are evident in Melinda from the beginning to the end of the novel? How does Mr. Freeman inspire Melinda? How can I effectively use research to create a brochure?

  6. Gauging Student Needs • I will begin the unit with an anticipation guide that will determine students thoughts and feelings towards different themes from the novel. This will help guide me in my lessons and where I need to direct their attention. • Students will complete a KWL chart on depression and sexual assault. This will help me gauge how much information they actually know about the topics.
