Digestion and Absorption of Nutrients in the Gastrointestinal Tract

Fatty acids, glycerol, and glucose are key nutrients in the gut. Glucose transport is hindered by low sodium or ATP inhibition. In the mouth, mechanical and chemical digestion occur, aided by enzymes and mucus. Learn more about this vital process!

  1. Fatty acids and glycerol are both fat soluble. They are at a high concentration in the gut lumen.

  2. Glucose concentration is high in the lumen. It moves through the membrane at the microvilli and then through the membrane again beside the capillary. The transport of glucose seems to be limited when sodium concentration is low or when ATP production is inhibited.
