  1. Beam Diagnostics for ADS Dirk Vandeplassche SCKCEN EUCARD-2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS CERN, 20-21 March 2014

  2. Introduction: framework Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • Accelerator for ADS: • modest in terms of beamenergy and current performances • challenging for CW and beam-MTBF • practicalexploitation of a real machine: • ancillaryequipment • diagnostic equipment • control system

  3. framework control layer ancillaryequipment LINAC CW beam MTBF > 250h diagnostic equipment control layer Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014

  4. framework: present • grey: smallscalestudiesonly • acknowledged issues: • industry standards • someform of redundancy Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014

  5. Introduction see: CDT Deliverable D2.4 "Accelerator design related issues", Chapter 5 Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • The R&D need for new diagnostic devicesisverysmall • 2 main global questions regarding diagnostics: • consequences of ADS operation • consequences of the reliability goal

  6. Global concepts: ADS operation Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 Consequences of the ADS operation of the accelerator onto the diagnostic system ?

  7. Global concepts: reliability Confidence Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 Consequences of the acceleratorreliability goal onto the diagnostic system ? mission: avoidbeam trips — fastrecoveryfrombeam trips — foreseebeam trips

  8. reliability Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • How ? • atlevel of individual diagnostic device • MTTF (obvious) • include provisions for • self-diagnostics • self-evaluation • self-calibration • self-repair • powerfullowlevelcontroller (FPGA) • at the global level of a given diagnostic system : • make the system overdetermined (redundant) • statistics • coherencechecks • numerical confidence level • generateenough data for predictivealgorithms to beapplied • powerfulhighlevelcontroller

  9. reliability Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • based on : • highestquality hardware • highestquality timing system (WR to beevaluated) • models !! • behaviour of individual components • global: "virtualaccelerator" • matched Control System

  10. foreseeable R&D Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • R&D issues : • availability of experimentalplatformsislimited • presentlyenvisaged in MYRRHA context: IS + LEBT + RFQ • not extensive enough for coherencecheckswithbeaminducedsignals • useful for individualdevices: MTTF, self-checks • high power SS RF amplifier • smallscale tests on feedback systems (e.g. beamcurrentregulation) • smallscale tests on "virtualaccelerator" • conceptualdevelopments • global models • statisticaltools

  11. R&D Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014

  12. Conclusion and outlook Dirk Vandeplassche, Eucard2 — MAX Accelerators for ADS Workshop, CERN, 20-21 March, 2014 • ADS: diagnostics are facingcontradictoryrequirements • full protection • perfectstability • 0 false interlocks • keyword: confidence = reliability + coherence • border betweendevice and control becomesveryfuzzy • diagnostic system as a whole to go into the reliability model • main message: itis time to consider the diagnostics within the ADS accelerator R&D program. The subject (or items of it) maybe of broaderinterest and profit from possible synergies withother programs.
